Looking at getting into a GT4 soon. Been reading and watching non stop about the argument for both so would be keen to get in touch with current owners in the area. Keen to hear how it fairs with the roads up here especially over winter months and also which model and spec people opted for. Must haves etc.

Biggest issue is there are hardly any for sale in Scotland so even having a look around one is few and far between.

Coming from an Exige V6 then a M2 Competition which seems a very common transition on owners groups etc.

Any help appreciated thanks.

South Aberdeenshire 718 here. Manual with carbon buckets and a few other options.
Not had it over the winter yet, but if I do run it in the winter months will be replacing the Cup 2’s.
My first Porsche and I love it.

A mate of mine whos about 12 miles form Aberdeen sold his M2 Comp for a 718 GT4 at the start of the year. I'm sure he'd give you his thoughts (he loves it). Do you use Instagram? If so, send me a PM and I will tell you his profile and I'm sure he'd be happy to chat about it with you.

I've got a Spyder, not a GT4, but spec options etc are the same. I'm in Alford, happy to help if I can.

I don't use my car in winter, but I've got no issues with the car on local roads

I had a 981 GT4 for 2 years in Aberdeen. I have since moved on to a 991.2 GT3 Club Sport.

Black, Carbon Buckets, PCCB, IPE Exhaust, Extended Leather, Carbon and Alcantara Interior. I really liked it for what it was. I also used it throughout the year. You just need to be careful with the PS2 tyres when it gets really cold as they won't work very well, so its worth changing out to the 4S if you want to use it over the cold and wet months.

The only issue I had was with the rear handbrake actuator which was failing (opening and closing slower than designed) which lead to excessive wear on the brake shoes used for the parking brake. Apparently not uncommon with the Cayman parking brake mechanism.

As far as your must have items, its really up to you. Personally I had to have the PCCB, Folding Bucket Seats, Extended Leather and Carbon options. I don't like them spec'd with the plastic dash and with the aluminium interior trim. But again, its a personal preference.

Don't be shy about getting Porsche inspection if you're buying from somewhere that isn't either an OPC or an independent Porsche specialist. If you're getting one with PCCBs. Get them checked. You don't want to be left holding the bag should they need replaced for any reason.

Have a look at the 718 GT4 as well. I'd say they are a little more refined and have an option of PDK if that's something you're looking for.

As long as its been looked after and well maintained, I'd say they are pretty solid and you don't really have much to worry about with them.

How do you find the gearing, is it an issue to enjoy on our roads or a non starter argument? I haven't driven either yet.

Anything you would recommend as a must have?

A1 spec by the way. Any reason you opted for folding buckets as opposed to 918s or 18 way seats?

Also did you drive both 718 and 981 before deciding? I am leaning towards 981 for noise and rawness despite there not being much difference price wise.

Thank you! I wanted folding carbon buckets because for me they are the most comfortable. They also come with a little more practicality in that you can fold them to get small luggage behind you. And most importantly when living in Scotland, you can option them as heated smile

With the 918 buckets you may get a feeling of being tilted too far forward. You'll see online that many will use shims to tilt them back slightly. Something to look into if you opt for the 918 seats.

I made sure I got the same heated carbon buckets in my GT3 as well. I've added some pics so you can get a better look.

Again, its all personal preference. There is no right or wrong answer so go have a seat in both if you can. You'll spend a lot of time in them so you want to get it right.

Did I drive both 981 and 718? No, I didn't. But, I found one in the spec I wanted, full Porsche history and maintenance. So those were the important things for me. Although the 4L engine in the 718 is more powerful and I prefer the chrono clock placement in the 718 over the 981. But that's about it for me really..
