300ish bhp, "why would you want one of them?" Because they exist, the height helps us oldies get in with more ease on the aching joints, and I have a lot of s

t to carry about. Mid sized or bigger.

20-24k, post 2017, seems to bring in the Cupra Ateca, which seems to be firm and drab on the inside but a Golf R on stilts. Carwow says "but a Golf R estate, it's more fun to drive". Which might be a point but doesn't meet the brief.

The RX450, which is fine, in fact I'm sure it's good, but a little like owning a washing machine. Sure, I have one, but I couldn't tell you anything about it as it's purely a functional thing... Wonderfully forgettable?

The supercharged F-Pace, there is deffo a reader's car thread on one but I can't find it (from memory the title isn't anything to do with a Jag), would be interested in views. The general car doesn't get much love, is that because of the engines (yes Ecsy!) but what about the rest? Velar fairly close in price too, guessing these all use the same cut down V8 as the base unit, not sure why Velar carries a premium?

What from these is worth a look, what else have I missed?

I'd have the Cupra, as I'd prefer 'sporty' handling to 'boat' handling.

I'm with you on SUVs. It's like man u fans complaining about Liverpool. Yes, you were good and in demand in your day, times have moved on. SUVs have all the boring practicality of an estate, but better driving position, less glare from other drivers, and in case of EV means batteries can go on floor, so lower center of mass, so still good to drive.

Would you consider an EV? £25k will get you a model Y LR AWD with warranty remaining. I moved from a lexus NX to one. The lexus is a lovely car, comfy etc, but the tesla felt leagues ahead in every department, and equal in build quality. So much better to drive, much much roomier, you could probably park the lexus in the boot of the tesla. Was like moving from VHS to 4k HDR.

The tesla is a heck of a lot quicker than the jag, and will be much more reliable. Also more fun on b roads as suspension is stiffer and is 500kg lighter. Cant steal it either if you have pin to drive set. The sound system in the tesla is spectacular too, no droney engine noise either so you get the full effect.

As you can tell, I'm an EV convert, they're better in every way.

Edit, don't know closely your suggestion is related to the formentor. But I had one on hire (2024 plate), easily the worst car I've driven in last decade. Utterly crap. Crap handling, crap seats, stupid slow laggy media system, a joke of a boot, cramped in the back, crap LKA, 25m electric range, sounds like an aircon unit when engine is on, extremely slow, crap headlights, speakers are naff, the unlock system is utterly s

t. Was glad to get back to my Jogger.

Put me off any cupra or VW for life. No wonder the Chinese are winning.

I'd probably be looking for a GLC43. Once you look past the fact its allegedly 'not a real AMG', they actually drive extremely well! Despite not being a V8 they do have a very good soundtrack as well, although don't know if they have speakers in the exhaust like the SQ5.

It's a good point, but they are tiny inside. And the bigger one is ancient for this money or a stinky diesel.

The EV suggestions are more interesting than I thought, this did tickle me the other day

Deprecation on some of these is interesting though, things like an X5, a low mile (say 40-45k) Euro 6 diesel (and I really don't want diesel) which might be from 2014, is still pretty much north of 20k. And they seem to sell. EV's, different story.

ETA also with you on the Formentor, love the way they look, infotainment a disaster by almost every account, and the one I did find with the 300bhp has more water in the boot than most people use to shower with.

They aren't big granted. Not much bigger than our Mini Countryman on the inside. Standard VAG reverse Tardis - fine for two people, no good for four.

Mustang Mach-e 91kWh AWD. If you ignore the "mustang" it's a good EV and steer.

iPace 400 in budget, a nice car to drive, good involvement, but does carry the reliability of modern JLR products.

Various Audi and Mercedes models available but meh.

Hahaha!

Whoever designed the dashboard needs a slap. Under the screen you have a hot and cold icon to the left, and one to the right, for the dual climate control.

In the middle, there's a plus and minus. You'd think to control fan speed. Nope, it's for the volume control laugh

And then with the media system, once it eventually loads, if you want to change the speed, temperature and direction of air, you have to go to two different screens! Wtf?!

And the resolution is so s

t, instead of "Climate" at the top menu, it says "clima". Wtf is a clima? It's like a Chinese media system from 2007.

On the Jag front I've just found one of my own replies, which may answer the question, but also may have been tainted by the Ecsy thread. Who can say?!

I have a Mazda CX-60 PHEV, it has 325bhp and does 0-60mph in 5.8 seconds. The ride isn’t brilliant but it’s dead posh inside and has all the toys.

They're lovely lookers, I sat in a Takumi (the range topper anyway, white leather and wood) was really nice. But >40k already before I'd have found one with the two option packs, one was a sunroof, can't remember the other, and I pay an awful lot of tax already. Looks like slim.pickings in budget because they're so new and nice. Think that could be next time round when they've dropped off a bit more.

Having done 3 hours driving duty of a 9 hour drive in one, I was completely underwhelmed by the experience and interior. Maybe because it was hire car spec.

So you rate the F Pace then? Strange how everyone else is silent!

And does fh Velar justify premium on top? Is that just because it's a newer design?

There is, at least, a lot of choice, and grateful as ever for your suggestions ZX.

A chap at work had an F-Pace and lived it enough to have two more (in sequence, not at the same time).

I do rate the F Pace it's a good car, the Velar does feel a bit nicer inside than the F Pace.

What I'd say is that if you find a good example of either then buy it, what I've found is that independent specialists actually give better service than JLR (good communication being the main issue) dealerships so keep that in mind.

I'm getting a Velar for a family (V6 S) member shortly as a replacement for their V8 Infiniti, luckily they have a good specialist near them hence the change,
