2005 corrolla 1.4VVTI, 330k km on the clock, always well serviced. Clutch replaced 100k km 5years or thereabouts when doing a gearbox bearing. Air filter is spotless, not checked the spark plugs yet.

When pulling away from roundabouts the last 3 days I find my Corolla giving a judder, like either the clutch is slipping or struggling for fuel. Only happens in this situation. Im driving on roundabouts around town bypass, thus I usually glide in in 5th year, and off out again and then gradually accelerate away without changing gear. Revs would drop back to 12-1500revs, not far from engine idle.

roundabouts, a mix of flat and mild uphill.

I can accelerate as hard as i like at high revs and no slipping or juddering.

Any ideas

the Haynes manual I have says there is no petrol filter.

Tried the handbrake test on the clutch this evening on flat ground and it would stall the car. I did the test in 1st gear. Would easily stall the car if doing it in 2nd gear or 3rd gear

Would need to be road tested to replicate the issue.

Sounds like either spark plug or coil pack not playing nice. Investigation needed.

It does beg the question, though - why take roundabouts in 5th gear?

been doing some roadtesting, pottering along at 15km/h (1000rpm) and increase to fullpower up a slight incline I can fine a few judders in either 4th or 5th gear, juddering goes away once get above 2000rpm. almost seems like one of the wheels is losing grip, it could be either left or right wheel, dont think corolla has quite enough power for that somehow.

can go up v steep hill flooring it in 3rd gear at 30-40km/h and no issues.

when i get a judder, revs dont jump up was keeping a watch

must check spark plugs tomorrow. I was wondering if it was either spark plug or coil pack would I not experience an occasional judder when cruising at 80-100km/h.

More likely to fail under low revs/wide open throttle/high load.

As has been said to you above, you are in too high a gear to do what you are trying to do.

I don't think I have ever (in well over 40 years of driving) even attempted a roundabout in 5th!

If purely only when engaging drive, ie releasing the clutch pedal and slipping a little. It could be some sort of contanimation on the friction disc, fluid of some sort which can cause a judder as it no longer slips smoothly.

OP, if you drive the car like a normal person would, eg using the correct gear for speed and engine load, does the car drive as you’d expect?

A high mileage car with relatively low power engine and OP is wondering why it does not pull cleanly in 5th gear from near idle rpm.
Not a question I would be wasting time or money worrying about, just select a more appropriate gear.

I mean, I would need to road test it to confirm the issue, rather than relying on the OP posting on the internet and describing it.

^^^ That.

It is bad for the engine to labour it, as well as not working well.
