I was recorded speeding yesterday, by community volunteers. No issue with that, I'm guilty.

I have a long, squeaky clean driving record so,
at worst, anticipate receiving a standard letter. My speed was 26mph.

I appreciate that such monitoring sites have to be pre-approved and this one is particularly appropriate as it in a 20mph limit, outside two schools.

The mild irritation is because, in the hundreds of times I have driven past there, I have never witnessed any such checks, yet they pick a clear evening during the summer holidays!

The crime isn't doing 26, it's failing to be aware enough to notice a pack of Dayglo Do-Gooders.

There is a simple reason for the timing; if they had picked school hours, they would have caught each other, or their wives/daughters on the school run.

Well, how are they going to catch people speeding when it is actually busy and everyone is already doing <20mph because it is actually higher risk? tongue out

A mild irritation indeed and one of no consequence which I'd have forgotten long before now.

Literally this.

Only time I've bumped into this kind of lot was on Christmas day and they decided to step out into the road to try slow me down. Wasn't even speeding, B-road in a heavy V8 ain't it.

I guess it's quite a while since the last nonsense CSW thread, so time we had one again.

Very much this. The first community speed watch was set up in Ash, Somerset in 2001 after numerous complaints of speeding through the village. Most of the people they nabbed in the initial stages were villagers.

You will only suffer a mild irritation if you try to use as toilet paper the letter you will inevitably receive. The paper they use isn't very soft, barely absorbent and not medicated like Izal.

I lived in Somerset at the time, it was mentioned in the local press.

My nephew recently was speed checked by a crack CSW squad. 48 in a 30 if my memory serves me correctly. His letter was had delivered by a uniformed Police officer to his mum with some very strong words of caution.

It is all so bloody pointless.

That kind of makes sense. in percentage terms the largest number of people driving through the village are going to be the people who live there. (i.e. every single trip they make will involve driving through the village)

I doubt that any data exists which shows that the villagers who were caught were the same people who advocated for the CSW scheme. It's quite possible that

1. some people living in a village are worried about speeding
2. other people in the village think it's absolutely fine and safe to exceed the speed limit.

Agreed -
We only have it because there aren’t enough police officers to catch the aholes doing 48 in a 30 and local authorities won’t take any action unless the villagers have undertaken a speed watch program. Even then nothing is done about the speeders-
I’d arm them with manpads that would lock on at 40 +

Well, yes and no.
If people didn't drive like idiots we wouldn't need CSW
If there were enough money to have enough plod to stop the above then we wouldn't need CSW.

However neither of those are true. I actually stopped to chat with a CSW group once to see what they were up to. I was astonished at the speeds people were driving past and certainly saw the problem they were trying to solve. I know it's nice to be all PH macho to write them off as curtain twitching busy bodies, but just perhaps they might be trying to solve an actual problem.

Good for winding up the local plebs on Facebook though

The CSW where I lived couldn't get enough volunteers so the 'gun' they'd been provided with was loaned to the youth club which used it to see how fast kids could kick a football.
