Watching some of the Jeremy Clarkson version on Youtube a few thoughts occur to me. Presumably some PHers will have been on or know someone who has so will have some insight.

All the contestants do a silly wave while being introduced and look really embarrassed. Clarkson himself referred to them waving 'awkwardly'. There is obviously a good reason for this but what?

How long do they have between winning the fastest finger first and actually starting on the questions? By the time they phone a friend there is already a programme representative with the friend to check they aren't looking stuff up so must be a few days.

How many friends can they nominate? Even when they can only ring one they identify them by name and give a reason for their choice.

Always had the feeling the nominated "friend" is in the studio at the time of the recording, not sitting at home waiting for a call. I'm sure they record something like 3 or 4 shows per day.

The show has been around so long I'm sure Wiki has all the info on the format and how the show is produced.

According to wiki there was a point were the friend was in the studio but that wasn't the norm. At one time there was concern the friend was looking the answer up.
