Not the letter I wanted in my postbox this morning. Notice of possible prosecution for Devon and Cornwall constabulary.
Rural crossroads with two NSL roads. I waited for the car opposite me to turn right, looked right myself and then pulled out and turned right….. without rechecking to the left. Old boy in a Dacia took avoiding action, close enough for me to exclaim “ooh st” but not mega dramatic as Dacia was not going at any real pace.
Highly embarrassing as I’m a trained and daily blue light driver, but more worryingly could cost me my job if I get the full 6 points

What do you do for a living, why would it cost you your job?

I’m a paramedic. We can’t drive with 6+ points

Seems harsh/silly to be honest, surely as long as it's declared on your driver file/record etc it shouldn't result in you being off the run.

You need all the deployable staff you can get.

I have a dash cam but would never report someone for making a mistake such as described here.

I’d speak with a motoring lawyer op. Maybe agtlaw of this parish.

Bet the old geezer in the Dacia feels really smug for shopping you to the Old Bill. I wonder if he realises that Karma can be wonderful thing at times, well he might in 6 months time when he needs to be blue lighted to hospital and there's a delay due to insufficient drivers available.

I think if most people knew the unavailability of ambulances they'd be horrified.

I was on duty last night, saw an old boy laying on the driveway to his house as I passed so doubled back to go and check on him. He'd taken a fall, was 91 years old and after a quick check over it he had a nasty cut to his elbow and a suspected broken left hip. We dressed his elbow but didn't want to move him, he was in a lot of pain etc. Contacted Ambo, 3 to 6 hours if your lucky. Great.

Needless to say, upon being in our custody block later on with a prisoner there were 2 ambulances there dealing with dysfunctional wkers that on the face of it, just didn't fancy a night in the cells so wanted to go to hospital instead. All whilst still being able to be abusive and obstructive to the staff trying to deal with them.

Rant over.

Full 6 points???

A fixed penalty for careless driving is £100 with 3 points.

Alternatively, a course may be available. Course = no points.

If prosecuted then (absent special reasons) careless driving is 3-9 points or a ban with an unlimited fine.

So no accident, no damage, nobody hurt - but you could lose your job and consequentially people don't get to hospital so quickly.

This is an excellent example of what can happen when you get members of the public spying on each other as petty vigilantes and calling the cops.

If the worst happens I wonder if you could sue Mr Holierthanthou for loss of earnings?

Zero sympathy here. Old boy and Dacia could have easily been a bike, which is not so easy to take "avoiding action" on.

Where do we draw the line on who and who doesn't get points because of their job ?

Hi mate. I’m a paramedic too for WAST, who do you work for as I must admit I don’t think our driving policy is quite as harsh on penalty points causing us to be taken off the road.

I work for APG down in Plymouth. Our driving policy is pretty draconian when it comes to points.

Eh? I don't think anyone is saying he shouldn't get points because of his job?

You absolutely wouldn't be taken off the road due to 6 points. If your trust is anything like ours they'll be hemorrhaging staff, so you'll just be a non-driver for a bit. Really wouldn't worry about it.

That's not actually the issue, it's a consequence. The point is that it was a non-event, and if anyone says they've never made a mistake while driving they're a liar.

Trouble is the police don’t think it’s a non issue or they wouldn’t have issued a NIP.

OP, hopefully you get offered a course - wife did one which was basically a half day of theory and then a half day of driving with no way to fail (unless you don’t show).

The op made a mistake, he’s owned up for that.

Have you ever made a mistake?
