recently recieved a NIP 82 in a 70

now this isn't really a can I get out of this type post but.

the evidence pics clearly show the signs to be off.

I was always under the impression they were inactive if no sign was lit and I've always treated them that way and never had any issue until last week

anyone have any experience of this type of thing

I don't want to be holier than thou, however I always assume that doing more than 78mph on a motorway is risking 3 points. If the gantry wasn't there and you'd had a NIP from a mobile camera, would you have thought that's unfair?

I have always believed them to be on all the time.

The speed limit is 70 if the sign is off.

82 is faster than 70.

I think that sums it up?

(Cameras active even when the limit is not reduced is the answer I think thumbup)

I always assume they are active and go under them less than an indicated 80mph, an actual 82mph is probably closer to 90mph indicated and whilst I have no issue with that speed they do...

it was in Warwickshire which is not a route I normally travel

It might vary depending on locality but I’ve never chanced it due to the reason you have mentioned. I’ve seen the signs off in some locations and people speed through at 80mph without an issue. Other places, I’ve seen people trigger the camera when the sign is switched off.

If the signs are switched off and I know there’s a camera there, I make sure I’m not exceeding the limit.

The sign might be off but it seems like easy revenue collection, even if the road is empty and there are no hazards.

The ones to the side of the gantry? They are always on.

By what twisted logic do you justify enforcing a limit illuminated by signs and not enforcing the National Speed Limit(70) when the signs are not illuminated?

Ken Dodd didn’t form the enforcement policy.

Apparently, you were always wrong then, sorry, clearly you have been lucky for quite some time, as I believe this is the norm & has been for some time.

I believe (in the early days) they were typically off on the M1, but that was some years ago now.

It seems that amongst others, you have experience of "this type of thing" sorry.

Why would you believe the cameras were off? Surely better to assume they are on?

I pounded motorways for years and it's a fairly recent thing that the cameras nabbed people for doing over 70.

Supposedly the M25 cameras have always been capable of it, but they weren't used, or the trigger was set very high. On the more recent smart motorway installations they seem to be on for 70 by default. The one on the M62 around Leeds caught a lot of people at first/

A lot of people think this, and its always astounded me.

I even know someone who got done by a motorway camera because they thought it was switched off rolleyes

Yeah I tested out the M4 Smart motorway ones near Reading a couple of years ago. They work at 80. Stupid really as the cameras can easily be seen on the ends of the gantrys (left side).

M25 has always been much more lenient in my experience.

I don't blame the OP for wanting to drive faster than our silly speed limits allow. And I don't blame him for doing it. But to think that the government would not take every available opportunity to punish you for driving a car is stupid. Why the heck would they NOT fine you when the camera is right there and you've given them the perfect excuse?

In Warwickshire I have always assumed they were permanently on but I know that for many years you could drive at gps 84 and not get a ticket (because that's what I did)

I tend to treat them as always on but have heard many times people saying that they only activate when the variable limit is in place, certainly a commonly held view.

Seems a bit like the cameras in the new 20mph zones, lots of folk saying the cameras won’t work below 30. That may well be the case today, but will likely change at some point!
