I'm in Woking for a week in August whilst my daughter is at a drama school.

Taking my (road) bike to fill in the time when I'm not working. Any decent routes/areas to head?

Box Hill is 25/30km away, I've ridden it 3 times on Ride London, I'll do it once again, but it's probably the most underwhelming 'hill' I've experienced, so looking for any other suggestions before I blindly look at Komoot and Strava.

Thanks.

if you head out towards Pyrford/Ripley/Send there are some nice roads and that will jog memories of the old Ride London route. Onto chapel lane/ leith hill / whitedown / ranmore if you want some hills rather than box hill which you can make a route up for.

Other than that you could go out to Chobham - I don't know that area but I know a few that do go that way.

Alternatively flat route out to Windsor and wave at the tourists

There are some horrible busy/ fast roads in and out of Woking just to be aware, but pretty sure you can avoid most of them

Woking down towards Send, Hungry Hill lane, over the road up Staple Lane, right down Coombe Bottom, over the main road and there’s many ways up Leith Hill, go wild up and around there then vaguely retrace your steps via Whitedown/Ranmore/Newlands corner.

Search "Leith Hill Octopus", should keep you busy for a day!

If you're on Strava, you can select the starting area and then (usually circular) routes of varying distances, download / use the gpx, and off you go

I live a few miles north of there and have a few favourite areas. It all depends on how far you're looking to ride - anywhere further south should be good.

- Farnham, Frensham area. Could get lost in the back roads over there for hours. The whole area south of Farnham is paradise for road riding
- Ripley then down to Ranmore common
- Surrey Hills (obviously) is the other side of Ranmore
- South of Guildford - Bramley down to Chiddingfold

Basically just stay off the major roads and you can't go wrong in these areas

Thanks everyone, that's given me a great insight into roughly where to target. I've got a Woking local sharing some of his favourite routes too.

On how far/long to ride. I'll conservatively have around 3 hours each day (by the time I've dropped my daughter off, ridden, showered, and got some work done) so 80-100km loops.

Always enjoy riding some new roads.

There are lots of nice roads in the area, as noted above. I'll often go around any roads to the west of Woking in the area up to the A331.

However I've reduced how much I go out because all these nice 'back roads' are also twisty and tight, and in an area with lots of people with sports cars who like to zoom around, especially at peak cycling times of early morning weekend. Had a lot of close calls.

I've therefore started to do more gravel or trails in the area, of which there are plenty, and quite a few are passible on a road bike with slightly wider tyres. A good long distance one is the south downs link from just south of Guildford all the way to the south coast and back up. Well over 100km, yet flat and no traffic (people traffic can be a bit busy around one or two villages if you're daytime).

The Basingstoke canal that goes through Woking is a fairly easy surface too and goes a long way.

Thanks. It's likely to be early afternoon/lunchtime when I head out, and I'd not thought of taking my Gravel Bike, main love is road.

Got a few routes mapped now. East to Ripley, Box, Denbies Vineyard, Crocknorth, Newlands etc. West to Farnham/Frensham. North to tourist spot at Windsor, plus a local zwifting friend has shared some of their routes.

The Bun Run is a bit of a classic - you'd normally start in Richmond but whenever I've done it I start in Windsor (and Woking is basically on the way round):

Do all of it in one go, or split it up; it's mostly on nice back roads with a few decent climbs.

It’s not a great route. It’s just one of the less st ones for those starting in London. If you’re starting outside of London you can do far better.
