Want to be away for Christmas again; went to Bali last year and enjoyed it but the world’s a big place so some other ideas welcome…

Anywhere in the southern hemisphere if you fancy a long flight, Dubai, Cape Verde (not much there) Australia, Thailand

I went to gran caneria on a last minute deal last year, it was great, 3 and half hours, 25 degrees the whole time and no whiff of Christmas anywhere but the hotel. We sat outside and ate tapas and paella instead of turkey then went for a walk on the beach.

Depends if your wanting big cities or small islands, good nightlife or relaxing evenings.

As you went to Bali last time then SE Asia is always a safe bet for long haul winter sun. We can then refine it once we the above and for how long.

Are you escaping the weather or the event?

We went to Cape Verde for Christmas and it was fantastic - we didn't go AI, organised flights & accommodation ourselves - there's a thread on it here - our trip starts 1/2 way down page 4. I must admit I thought I'd posted more photos (I've added a couple back in that seemed to have vanished).

I would definitely go back

Antigua or Aruba? Oman is amazing and Singapore plus time on Langkawi is a winner.

Both really, to be honest.

Thanks for the suggestions so far; been a bit remiss in responding but will get time later hopefully.

Currently looking for a week in the sun over the Christmas/New Year week.
Looking for the cheapest AI location that is shorts and t-shirt weather, and ideally a location that is unpopular with British Tourists. hehe
We are unlikely to leave the hotel for anything more than an after breakfast walk, while we wait for the bar to open. paperbag

Everything has gone up so so much.

We’ve done Mexico over Xmas and new yr in 2017, 2019 and 2023, for 11-12 night over Xmas and new yr.

In 23, for 2 of us it was just over 7k, now for 2025 its just over 10k.

Mental.

Is the 'last minute' deal still a thing?
30 years ago I'd walk in the travel agent and say 'what do you have for next week', would be quite alright with booking the week before we want to go as we aren't picky on location, but not sure if it's even a thing now.....bring back Ceefax. hehe

Sadly nto in peak season, which it is in SE Asia Nov- Feb. However..... we did fly xmas eve LHR to BKK for half price once not that long ago! Once you get there everything is booked/expensive mind you (Xmas specifically)

Don't need to travel that far to get the temps we're after, North Africa is far enough, the Canaries would be ok if it wasn't a bit of an Englishcentric destination, been to Cape Verde/Boa and wasn't a fan, although wouldn't rule it out completely if we went to a different island.

I can recommend São Vicente and Santo Antão - you can fly into Cesária Évora International Airport on the former. I'll be going to Santiago and Fogo next time.

No interest in Boa or Sal

Dubai does Christmas well and there is a real sense of celebration around the hotels and shopping malls.

Yes, year before last we were just going to have Christmas at home, on the 21st I was browsing TUI and found a trip to gran caneria. Booked it, flew out the 23rd and came back the 30th

Last min cancellation, 4* bed and breakfast in a really nice hotel adults only, £1600 for 2 people

In contrast, the year before I looked at Cape Verde and jr was £5000 for 2 people, so then I looked at later dates, and booked a week from the 29th at the TUI sensimar for 2 of us for £2100 and then spent £600 on 2 nights in a spa hotel over Christmas in the u.k

There will always be last minute deals with package co.s like Tui. For independent travel, not so much. They have no packages to sell.

For sure - had the Thailand response in mind. For us, the TH flight isn't long. Either 11 hours premium , with sleep, or usually a 6+5 with a handy stop over in Muscat or similar. Then its cheaper when you get there (accom food and booze)

On a budget: Thailand, Malaysia or somewhere nearby in SE Asia. Otherwise Australia or New Zealand?

Caribbean, Central or South America. Depending where, flying time can be less than SE Asia.
