The cost of cabin bags for an upcoming trip has tipped over my 'fk em' threshold.

Need a bag that's 43 x 33 x 16 or as close to as possible.

Osprey do one that's perfect but it's a bit pricey. The Daylite 26 + 6

Anything similar to that but cheaper and won't fall apart?

I bought one of these. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CP27XRCR. -- was about £16

More than sturdy enough. Easily squashed into Vueling's measuring crate.

I had intended to throw it when I got back, but I quite like it

Loads of them on Amazon.

More reputable brands that match airline cabin bag dimensions exactly include:

Cabin max
Aerolite
American Tourister

I got a Cabin Max bag. The bag is well made, and works well as luggage, but its st as a backpack, esp compared to stuff like Osprey. Its dimensioned to maximise luggage space, not be balanced on your back with a load.

You get what you pay for.

Look up all the airlines you are likely to fly for their max cabin bag sizes and buy the bag with those dimensions in mind.

Having said that, in practice, I’ve found using a bag 5 cm too big isn’t going to attract attention. All of the people I’ve seen stopped by airline staff have had piss take large bags. Some managed to squash them down in the sizer and get away with it. They don’t give my cabin max bag, nor the slightly oversize normal backpack my Mrs carries a second look.

I use Rock cabin bags for flying Ryanair. I bought one off their website with discount for about £60. The very next day Mrs WD found some similar Rock cases in Tesco for £25.

Indeed. I've got a couple of cheapo 'Cabin Max' branded bags from Amazons and they aren't the best quality, are just rectangular shaped to get the most stuff inside rather than being nicely styled but perfect for a few flights a year.

O/T This is a good general guide but I always use a 40 litre hiking backpack for the freebie carry on with Easyjet, Ryanair etc no problem.

It's just about getting something the most efficient shape to fit their silly little bag checker, which most bags aren't.

Got caught by this on Friday, wife warned me it had changed but my measurements thought I’d be fine. Nope, 2 cm out & that’ll be £48 please. What a con.

Slightly off topic but I’m sure I read somewhere that Ryanair are having to increase the size of their under seat bag allowance?

I bought one for £9.99 for my first ever RyanAir trip to Vigo last Christmas.

When it turned up I thought there's no way this 'hand bag' would suffice for a cold rainy week, but it did, and was useful as a backpack for day trips around the city and venturing further out.

It taught me the art of packing light which was blooming useful when I drove my Alpine to Tenerife last February biggrin

As above, Ryanair haven't done this out of kindness to passengers, it's an EU law that is forcing their hand (which technically wouldn't need to be applied to UK-UK flights).

I have a couple of different size Aerolite bags for different airlines. They are all fine and reasonably priced.

1. If it's just for flying, do you have a Decathlon nearby?
2. And if you have self control, nothing to stop you getting a slightly over-sized bag provided it's squidgy in the over-sized dimentions and you don't then pack it to the rafters.

3. And as for RyanAir changing their size, they are - but over the next 12 months. Advice is to plan on the old dimensions this year as it's better to get to the gate and find you could have used a bigger bag than get there and find your new-size bag doesn't fit the old-sized gauge for your flight.

You might not like it, but it's hardly a con. Your bag was too big, so you were charged.

We bought ours on Amazon UK though they are not on there right now.

We've not only flown Ryainair and Easyjet several times, but both took them round India and Thailand over 3 months. I carried a 7Kg Ganesha bronze in mine for 2 months, dont ask!

They are still going strong and have been faultless. Great front pockets and zip sections for passports , docs, keys etc, and although the trolley handle seems laughable, they are actually very usable and a great relief on long transfers. You get speed wobble if you walk too fast :-)

I could not recommend them more highly. They have rucksack straps zipped away too though we don't use them. We added straps on the back so they slide onto the trolley handle when we travel with an overhead bag too.

Son & DIL are regular short break fliers. They got their bags from B&M £10-£15 ish and sized for the cheepo carriers.
