Ive had a quote of £1450 for a midia split aircon on an outside wall. After trying to order an LG off the web and realising you need an FGAS number to complete the order I'm thinking this is getting more expensive than I hoped.

Is there any split air con on the market you can buy that diyable?

Nope. You can DIY a packaged system as they’re pre filled. Some pros and cons to this in terms of the installation and efficiency.

If you’d fitted one yourself before, you’d not be considering doing it again smile worth the fee imho.

Must say I agree about getting someone to supply and fit.

And 1450 isn’t that far off either for the time of year, depending on spec.

For that sort of money, I'd be expecting a more well known make of unit, for the purpose of consumables and spares....Whilst Midia might be fine, personally I would stick to the likes of Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Samsung, LG, Panasonic etc.

You can buy a split unit from most suppliers online without an F-gas number, however, registered F-gas installers will typically be able to purchase VAT free under the current Government Scheme which acknowledges a DX unit as a Low to Zero carbon technology.

However, as eluded to above....whilst installing the indoor, outdoor and maybe trunking is straight forward for a DIY'er, I'd want the pipe work, pressure testing, charging and commissioning of the system done by a pro.

Considering the recent hot weather and the fact it seems to happen every year now I have started seriously looking into these. To be honest if someone had said to me last week they could fit one for £1450 I would have ripped their arm off.

The issue we have is we live in a tiny two bedroom Victorian terrace and there is really only one wall we could fit one on. However the space above the back door is only 36CM high and I understand you need a space of 10CM above the unit.

Are there any units that are 25CM high that would fit in this space, or as I suspect is it too small and hence why the previous owners didn't fit one?

Where can you purchase without an fgas? Appliances direct require one. Thanks

That seems quite expensive for that brand. If you can hold out until Autumn/Winter, you should be able to get Daikin installed for that money.

Surely people have a/c fitted in the winter, waiting for the hottest week of the year seems a bit daft. A bit like buying a convertible when the sun is out.

Yes they do, but the trends are just a reflection of human nature. Demand and therefore pricing on cabriolets starts to spike around March / April when people start seeing more warm/dry/sunnier days and think, "right, lets get a convertible"....it wains in autumn and drops off a cliff through the darkest / coldest months. Exactly the same with garden furniture etc. That's just life.

Equally, you'll find domestic AC installers are currently quoting like mad at the moment and with it, making the most of their profit margins wherever they can, exacerbated further by quoting on cheaper brands of units they can make more money on. I suspect most are now booking well into September/October time.

A good friend of mine is a local AC installer & maintainer (domestic and light commercial) and his domestic side drops off dramatically Nov-Feb time.

Seems quite sensible to me? Ride out the remaining 6-8 weeks of the summer, and then get the same system installed for much less during the winter? Am I missing something, or maybe i'm just 'tight'?!

Are you sure it's still possible to purchase pre-gassed ones?

From what I've seen, everything for sale requires F-Gas installation.

FWIW I've just been quoted £4,070 for a Daikin 'Stylish' system with two interior units (lounge and bedroom) and one exterior unit. Price includes installation and electrics.

I'm not sure how much cheaper it'll be. We had our fitted in Dec last year. We recommended the same guys to colleagues, but when they enquired with the company in Feb this year they told were told to call some one else because the company had booking into this summer already.

We the tend that UK summers are going to keep getting warmer I would say just get it done ASAP. I've yet come across any trades that's got cheaper over time.

And here's a thought. We fit our houses with central heating for when it's cold. Why not fit them with a/c for when it's hot? And in winter the same units can add heat to rooms. I see a/c units starting to appear on houses round here just like double-glazed windows did 30 years ago.

Midlands based here and had 6 indoor / 2 outdoor Fujitsu units professionally fitted a week ago for £8k. He did an install at our previous house too so it was a special price. We have just moved and the new house has oil central heating which I want to eliminate as much as possible. The units also heat very efficiently and can be independently controlled and programmed from an app.

Happy to pass on the number of the guy for anyone around the Northampton area.

I would

I bought a cheap system knowing I would struggle to get it fixed - and I am... I'm suspicious of my flexible pipework, which they have stopped selling.

But I can replace it 3 times over for the cost of the 'professional install', and looking at our village thread, no one is willing to maintain the professionally installed ones anyway....

I will likely just swap it - about a days work i think.

In the UK, if an homeowner decides to fit his own heat pump, is this an offence? If so, who polices this? And how do the authorities find out?

(Vacuum pump and a set of gauges strongly recommended).

What size is the unit and how many internal units are you having? I'm getting a small Daikin unit fitted in my garden room (straight through the back wall) for <£1200 but had quotes up to £2200 for bigger units.
