but when you take your dog to the toilet, do you pick it up?

A reasonable question? It would appear not.

I've just been cleaning the car and a lady has taken a couple of trips to a piece of common land in front of my house.

The first time she took 3 dogs, and returned about a minute later, the second she did the same with 1 dog. Neither time was she carrying a bag, also there are no bins there.

On her way back I very politely asked the question.

She looked at me and hesitating a little said yes, I dont think you should be asking me that question.

I asked who she thought I should be directing the question to, she replied that it was common land and none of my business.

I pointed out that I walked through it and that it wasn't particually pleasant stepping in dog shit, but as she picked hers up there wasn't a problem.

She repeated that she did pick it up and her dog had just had a wee and off she stomped, only to turn around at a reasonable distance and tell me I should turn my music down.

Now was my question unreasonable?

Had it been directed at me I would have said yes, flashed my shit bags and given them a full rundown of my dogs bowel movements.

Me thinks she doth protest to much.

Indeed. She was basically embarrassed at being caught out and went on the attack as a form of defence...

{edited to add:} Dog on common land is a right pain and a health hazard, especially to children.

I can't stand people who don't clear up their dog's mess. We ALWAYS scoop our dog's poo. People who don't are both selfish and lazy and give us scoopers a bad name.

As an aside, our dog is a female and will wee by squatting down and not by cocking her hind leg. This could sometimes be mistaken for us not scooping. Maybe one (but I doubt all) of the dogs you saw does a similar thing?
Oh and turn your music down, you hooligan!

 this really pisses me off

If you know where she lives, pick it up in a plastic bag and drop it through her letter box with a note telling her she forgot to pick up something that she left behind.

Quite possibly, had she said that there would be no problem.

I'm ashamed to say I actually turned it up, had she asked politely I would have turned it down.

Always pick it up, always have a bag, always use a bin (always walk where there are doggie bins, as it's not the most pleasent of things to carry around).

Not particularly pleasant, but when you're walking the dog, and carrying a bag of dog shit, and see someone else doing the same, you have a nod to each other as 'doing the right thing'.

Did you know a bag of dog shit is like a badge of honour?

The real question is do you retrieve the dog-egg from the ground, or catch it as it falls out?

I was always under the impression that it is illegal to leave dog waste on public land, but I may be wrong. A quick call to your local council offices might help.

Always pick up without fail. There are too many lazy bu@@ers who don't though.

I use nappy sacks which are the perfect size and mask the smell....to an extent. Also on colder days a full bag makes a great hand warmer

Nah... it usually prefers to squat by itself. Holding a shaking dog whilst it shits can be tough on the arms.

We have a great dane, always pick up his dogy doos, inconvenient to carry a shovel but a carrier bag suffices. If we can pick that up there is no excuse for smaller dog owners not to pick up theirs.

This thread reminds me of a story in our local paper a few years ago, a lady was out walking her dog when some git ran up & snatched the bag she had, would love to have seen his face when he realised he had stolen a bag of crap. Sometimes there is justice.

Put in in your pocket. Nice and warm on a winters day

That's in a bag, of course.

Handy for quelling mutinous kids, too

My ex had a labrador. She always took a carrier bag with her to pick up the poo but only used it if there was anyone about to see. If not, turdus steameratus vergicus.

I've 2 of the buggers, and I always pick up after them - and like most folks on here feel it is only proper to do so, and annoys me greatly when you see folks who don't.

Most jeans/fleeces/coats have poo spare poo bags on the pockets- Bob martin ones are good.

I tell you... makes you focus the mind...picking up dog nuggets on a freezing winter morning at 05:30!!!

Different case entirely if they've got a dose of the thruppeney's!!!!!
