'New' mattress too hard

I bought a new Vispring bedstead mattress in medium tension from a major retailer after trying it in store.

After 11 months of waiting for it to 'break in' I am finally having to admit that it is just too hard. It makes me sleep in funny positions in an attempt to get comfortable and ended up causing me back pain. I have no history of back pain, and the pain subsides completely after two nights in any other bed.

I guess the suggestion is a new mattress- but to me it was a big investment.

When I bought it I was trying to ensure I was buying natural fibres after a previous bad experience with a Tempur memory foam mattress.

A topper of some kind?

Is anybody able to make a recommendation?

I would look at a soft topper.
Also how old are your pillows?
They may be causing the awkward angle too.

Thanks for the reply. I bought a pair of down pillows at the same time, I have many in the house, always the same problem. One is too small, two are too big and puffy- so the system is, get a pillow, put it in a protector in a pillowcase and beat it up into a little ball before sleeping.

I should try an alternative pillow which is harder than down, and higher, shouldn't I?

I upgraded a 10 year old sprung mattress to a Simba hybrid and love it.

I also got some REM fit pillows at the same time. Memory foam and firm, yet soft.
Perfect for me but the wife just went back to standard pillows as it was too firm for her. My daughter has it now and she loves it.
Our friends house sat for us last year and he was pleading with me over text asking me where I got them from as he loved the pillow. So they upgraded theirs too.

I sleep on 2 pillows .
a synthetic support pillow with a decent feather pillow on top that squishes down nicely

It's pretty difficult (and/or expensive) to experiment with different options sadly. What base are you using as we have 3 of the same mattress (well almost, 1 King & 2 doubles) across 3 different bases and they all feel quite different. The sprung divan base being the nicest and the storage bedframe (almost solid base) being the least nice. We even switched mattresses around but it was just the bases making the difference.

We had a very similar problem. A mattress topper made a pretty big difference, but still a bit short of perfection.

There are loads available but you're probably best off starting with a relatively cheap one. We've got this one : Silentnight Airflow King Mattress Topper – Mattress Enhancer Pad with 5cm Thick Cushioning, Airflow Technology to Reinvent Your Mattress and Elasticated Straps – King Size – 200 x 150 cm. It's currently £35 on Amazon, so worth a punt. There is an extra deep version for £50, but I don't think that's the one we've got.

Same boat here. Spent £1200 on one 8 months ago and I am very reluctant to buy another. Trouble is, its so thick that if we put a topper on it, the bed sheets wont fit over it.

It was on a solid base in the store, made of thick chipboard. Keen to replicate the experience, I bought solid, heavy duty slats for my bed frame. Recently, to try and soften it up, I put the sprung slats back in but it made little difference.

I often wonder if these cheap-ass mattresses from Amazon for about £100 are the way to go. They typically seem to last about a year to two before turning into the shape of a hammock and are then only fit for the skip, so at that point you just buy a new one. It seems that actual quality mattresses are no longer a thing and it doesn't matter what kind of obscene money you throw at one, it's still knackered within a couple of years or you discover after a week or so that it's not actually as comfy as you first thought and is now giving you grief, but you have thousands invested in it so just have to suffer.

A friend of mine has had the run-around with Tempur after spending nearly £3000 on one 2 years ago and it's sagged quite noticeably. Of course their assessor has said that it's all within tolerance and therefore won't be replacing it even though it's still under guarantee - a very common theme when trying to claim on the guarantee and they are not worth the paper they're written on.

I am sleeping on the guest bed mattress now. Which I bought new for practically a fifth of the money.

Spring divan base and / or a micro coil topper like this:

I’d go topper first, failing that add the sprung base.

You are spending far too much money on a mattress.

Which? magazine tested over 200 and the best were £500 to £800. Eze and Emma brands.

Ikea do very good mattresses around £2/300.

Its all very subjective I know, but I prefer firm mattresses. I sometimes sleep on the bedroom floor! Soft mattresses give me back ache - I sleep on my back and find that they sink in the middle (like a hammock).

We had our mattress custom made at a bed factory in West Yorkshire - excellent quality imo and a very fair price, much cheaper than the premium brands. Personally I do not like any of these folded mattress in a small box companies e.g. emma/simba etc.

If you're going to stick it out with your fancy new one - have you tried sleeping on your back?

A decent real wool topper is transformative.

Sounds interesting - where was it from and what sort of price was it?

Apologies I can't remember the exact prices we paid - it was a while ago. We ordered 2 mattresses and a bed frame. I have family who live nearby who recommended them after having a good experience. We popped in to their show room while on our biannual up north visit and got the job done and had them delivered a few weeks later. This was after several weeks of looking luxury brands and chain brands - we were ready to pay a 4 figure sum. I was a bit hesitant at first as in my mind, you normally pay for what you get but I'm very happy and glad I didn't spend more.

last one i got was a cheap sprung memory foam from amazon, around £100 i think and added a good topper less than £100, its the most comfy sleep ive ever had.
If it lasts a couple of years then money well spent

Hmm quite a range in price points to consider. And is a topper to fix an overly hard mattress an example of 'good money after bad'?

Our last 2 mattresses have been from Soak & Sleep.

https://www.soakandsleep.com

No affiliation, didn't know the name until about 12 years ago when we had an amazing night's sleep in a property we rented for a weekend away - to the extent where we took the sheets off the bed before leaving to find the manufacturer's label.

Bought the first mattress from them shortly after which lasted about 8/9 years, & another 3/4 years back.

Range of prices/types/budgets, can't remember what ours is except its sprung not foam, it's 300mm+ deep and is bloody heavy!

We've never had a problem but note they have some kind of 100-night trial policy on mattresses halfway down this page:

https://www.soakandsleep.com/returns-guarantee

Perhaps some food for thought / options.
