Well it's time for me to start driving for work again after 8 years of walking to work. I haven't had a car for over a year and thought I'd treat myself to a nice hot hatch to roll about in. I jumped on the standard advertising websites and carried out some MOT checks which left me feeling a little deflated with a lot of cars showing signs of neglect before I'd even arrived to view them. After talking with the wife, I decided that a cheap to run reliable N/A petrol car would be the way forward so que me suddenly looking at Citroen C1's/Pug 107's/Toyota Aygo's as they are cheap to run and pretty robust. I set my budget at £2000 and a few nice ones popped up but they were quite far away, so I resorted to Facebook Marketplace.

Within a 5 minute walk from my house, a 2007 yellow Peugeot 107 was up for sale with a years ticket with no advisories, a full service history with the last one just being done alongside the MOT, 3 owners from new, 66k miles and most of the common faults sorted including a recent clutch and exhaust. Within an hour a deal was struck and I was experiencing my 2nd ever drive in one of these cars..... the first one being about 15 years a go when one of my mates had one for his first car..... We found out very quickly that the handbrakes are good on these.

I went the long way home just to feel 17 again. I'm only 32 but even I have noticed cars get bigger, heavier and a little bit dull. My first car was a 1993 Key Largo edition Peugeot 106 and this has definitely bought back some great memories. The 107 has keep fit windows with no central locking and too be honest I couldn't be happier. Just basic, bare bones motoring.

The 107 drives well considering it cost me £1400, the gearbox and clutch are good, the engine is completely silent and there's no clunks or bangs in the suspension etc, it even handles really well. It needs a good buff and polish as it's 50 shades of yellow, plus the inner sills have slight surface rust so I'll treat that to make it last a couple of years. I've insured and taxed it for a year and the consumables are good, so hopefully I can have a cheap year of motoring. The plan is to tidy up a few bits and just enjoy using it as a daily, maintain it well and hopefully get a couple of years out of it...... proper bangernomics!

Plus a photo my mate "edited" (I'm already getting abuse for it lol)

My wife had an Aygo when we met, never drove one but was pleasantly surprised at how go-karty it felt. It's now on the drive waiting to get MOT'd and moved on after years of service.

I suggest looking at the boot window seals as they can leak quite badly into spare wheel well!

These are great cars whatever badge is on them (a friend had one in Citroën flavour). Nice colour too!
I think high level brake lights like to leak, but it's good to hear the clutch has been done.
Enjoy!

Thank you for the couple of nice comments, it's amazing to see how well loved these little tin cans are.

I spent the day on it today giving it a good clean, including the underside and under the arches etc. These cars have a reputation for rusting on the rear end, especially on the rear inner and outer sills, but luckily this one is pretty good for 18 years old. It has surface rust on the rear inner sills but it is completely solid and nothing to worry about as of yet, however, I will be spending some effort over the next couple of weeks sanding it back and painting it in good paint, followed by a nice coat of ACF50. I've also ordered some cavity wax to get inside the sills as well. The rest of the underside is in remarkable shape for its age, barely any surface rust anywhere and it's still yellow underneath! Even the front subframe looks in good condition.

Whilst I wait for some of the rust protection stuff to arrive, I decided to take the 'Peugeot 107' badges off as the "1" was missing..... it's like being 17 all over again! I also checked the clutch free play as these are manual adjusting and I felt the bite point was a little too high with too little free play. The good thing is I can adjust it whilst on the road (plus it gave me an excuse to go find some fun roads) and after a few miles I had the free play correct, the bite lower and the gears still engage nicely..... Happy days!

So to summarise, I couldn't be happier for the money, once I've done a bit of future proofing and tidied a couple of little bits up, the plan is to just use it and keep it going for as long as possible. I'm really hoping I can get a couple of years out of it at the very least with some preventative maintenance and frequent care. I really forgot how fun it is owning a cheap vehicle which is basic to maintain and not a lot to go wrong..... it really makes it enjoyable to own and drive!

A small car that you'll always be able to find in a car park!

Good luck with it.
