Looking to get a nice comfortable car, due to addition to the family.

Wife wants an SUV which i am generally not fan of but agreed to it, needs to be somewhat economical so diesel but I want V8 even if it's a diesel.

Budget is around 15k but at push could bring it up to 18k but rather get away as cheap as I can.

We are looking at 2013 to 2015 model years, seems like those are most common within the budget we are working with.

Choice has fallen on full size Range Rover with 4.4 diesel or Porsche Cayenne 4.2 Diesel, I fully understand that mileage for those at my budget will be 100k miles or bit over. Unless I do go up to £18k than i can get lower miles.

Would appreciate some advice on what people would get, some ownership experience, things to look out for.

Cheers

I've owned the 4.4 diesel in both a L494 and L405 - excellent engine and gearbox combo.

As with anything that big and with 80k+ miles expect to refresh a suspension arm or two in your ownership - really just a consumable and not expensive.

Check everything works - lots to check so don't be in a rush.

They are particularly voltage sensitive so reward being used daily and unless there's proof of a new battery being fitted recently I'd fit a new battery once I bought a car - preventative maintenance for very little cost.

Really great cars and nothing drives quite like them - I'd have another, which is a compliment as I can't say that about many of the 50+ cars I've owned.

If I was buying again I'd avoid both the electric deployable side steps and the largest wheel size - the latter impacting the ride quality more than you may think.

I have considered & driven the V8d Cayenne on a couple of occasions, although very competent they left me a bit cold - meh!
For me they are also very colour, wheel & trim sensitive and I never found one for sale which looked 'right' to my eyes. Don't forget that everything was an option so massive variances in spec which complicated things further.

Happy shopping!

If you want outright performance I'd go for the cayenne.

If you want a more comfortable experience I'd go for the RR. The TDV8 & gearbox is largely reliable with just a couple of common foibles. I don't know much about that Porsche V8 diesel engine but id imagine there's more experienced people around to work on the TDV8 than the Porsche unit.

You want the gearbox to have been serviced at least once on either car at those miles and check on the TDV8 for leaks around the 4 intake pipes and oil filter / cooler in the middle of the intake donut on top of the engine. If you can get underneath it have a look at the back of engine around the gearbox for leaks too where the oil cooler can leak and run down there. Ideally the TDV8 should be serviced every year and there's plenty around so I'd be avoiding any with large service gaps.

Autobiography is the one to go for if you want all the toys or more things to be break tongue out

2017+ models came with the newer widescreen infotainment system with android and carplay integration.

The above is great advice (if you want side steps fixed ones are the pick) both drive great but with your budget factor in that with the mileage you'll be looking at that they'll need suspension components refreshing.

Neither are cheap when it comes to this sp bare this in mind when test driving either.

As above make sure everything works twice!!!

Service history is a must & both should've had at least one gearbox/transfer case fluid change.

Saying all of this my first recommendation isn't either, it's the Cayenne's cousins the 4.2d Touareg/Q7.
Now they're hard to find but worth looking for as you'll get a good one for your budget:
