Its my dads 70th next year and I would love to take him on a long weekend driving holiday to take in some great roads and places. Originally I had hoped to take him in my own car (lotus Evora) maybe to Nuburgring then up to Switzerland and back but I no longer have a car of this type.

I have looked online and all i can really find is pre arranged supercar trips in very expensive exotica which cost stupid money and stay in lux 5 star hotels which would not fuss me. I wondered if anyone knew of a slightly lower spec holiday company or where I could rent a car in theUK that would allow me to travel to Europe for a few days?

Fly to Germany and you can hire plenty of good Sportscars from Sixt, with online quotes and the security of using a well known company.

We hired a Z4 M40i for a week and drove through Germany/Switzerland, it was great. You can also hire Porsche/Aston etc. Go to Stuttgart or Munich for the best selection.

Each to their own, but I couldn't think of anything worse than driving a Caterham from Scotland to Switzerland.

We rented a "Z4 manual or similar" from Sixt Madrid to drive up to the Extremadura one time. We got to the desk and they handed me the keys to a automatic diesel Merc SLC. I tried to explain that I had specifically chosen them as they had manuals and I really, really did not want a diesel but to no avail - "we only ever have automatic diesel sports cars". Nothing better than getting the extra clatter and stink of a diesel with your fresh air motoring!

I've always wondered why none of the big rental companies do an MX5. Cheap to buy, repair and with Japanese reliability seem like the perfect mix for open top rental fun. I wonder if Mazda won't sell them because of reasons?

That would be purely for Scotland, based on a thread title only. wink

Sorry soad, I'm confused.... Probably my fault.

The OP wants to hire a sports car in the UK and drive to Europe. SydneyBridge suggested hiring a Caterham from a Scottish company, who state on their website that you can take their hired Caterhams to Europe if you wish.

I was assuming the suggestion from SydneyBridge was for the OP to drive a Caterham to Europe. Or have I got that totally wrong?

There is no one in the UK who will rent you a sports car to cover the mileage incurred driving to Europe and back, for anything like sensible money.

Best option, as suggested above, is to fly to somewhere like Munich and rent from there.

If Scotland is an option I'd recommend this outfit, which offers MX-5s and an Audi TT for low daily rates with unlimited mileage: https://www.ecossesportscarhire.com/our-cars/

Yes, that’s my interpretation. Probably not what the OP wants/looking for though. Good to see that it’s still possible to rent one.

You used to be able to buy a Mk1 for not much more than what they charge for 10 day hire. To save needless link clicks - about £1k.

and a 20 year old TT from £109 per day !

You could always hire an SUV if a newer car is needed. But I doubt you'd find a 'sports car' for sensible money. (Acknowledging that a TT is stretching the boundaries of what constitutes a sports car.)

And yes, a 10 day hire is uneconomic, but if you want to fly in and out of Inverness as I did and spend 3 glorious days hooning across the Highlands, it's a decent option.
