Driver Convicted After Death
Discussion
This one is local to me. A road I use every week. At the time there was nothing published about what happened. My best guess has been confirmed, HGV turning left.
Two year ban, community service.
Tragic. I don't even know why anyone would filter inside a lorry here. It isn't a wide road. When I am passing queues here I am either on the pavement or overtaking on the outside.

Junction is here.

I don't see anything there that suggests he didn't just drive alongside her and turn. Not that she willingly undertook him....
I had some
in an Audi A1 do that literally yesterday. Not like it wasn't total daylight! I wont say what I hope happens to him. But it isn't "win the lottery"
I'm bored of accidents that involve the death of another person, bike or car or whatever and the guilty party NOT getting jail time. Or a lifetime ban from driving. Every f

That was my assumption too.Had a bus driver do that to me when I was a teenager biking to school (a *few* years ago now...), mostly passed me then turned hard left across me while I was going straight ahead. Fortunately I had quick enough reflexes to swerve left onto the footpath in time or good chance I wouldn't be here.

Yes. Very risky thing to do keep very clear of an HGV when on a bike.
This! I’ve had cyclists come down my Nearside on numerous occasions whilst I am turning (and indicating!!) Most commonly when I’ve started to turn at a set of lights, Some people are sadly so unaware of the danger of doing this-(I’m not suggesting this is what happened in this case, also it says the driver wasn’t indicating), but it is definitely a thing.Especially in Cambridge.

Court sentencing here."You were stopped on Drymen Road at the junction with Manse Road. Ms Brandreth cycled on the left hand side of your HGV to continue straight. You were stationary, with a gap in front of the HGV. Without indicating, you turned left into Manse Road hitting Ms Brandreth. She was dragged under the wheels of the HGV. You were unaware of hitting her, and drove on. Others called the emergency services. A doctor was called to the scene shortly before 9 am when Ms Brandreth was pronounced dead. "

Knowing the road, it is possible the only reason there was enough space to filter left was because the HGV driver had his vehicle towards if not on the centre lines to allow space to turn left. He was turning from a relatively narrow main road into a side street
There is often not enough space to filter left past cars never mind an HGV.

I never understand why cyclist seem to continually filter down the left hand side of vehicles near junctions. It s a recipe for getting your self killed, just wait. It s 30 seconds out of your day to make sure you get home to your loved ones.
My thoughts exactly and whilst the lorry driver was clearly at fault here, would she even have been aware of his indicator if he'd used it when she had already placed herself in such a compromised position.Lotobear said:

No point arguing who was right or wrong from the grave... If there's something big like a bus or an HGV and the gap is miniscule or closing, then I protect myself by not going in there in the first place.

It really depends, if you are DVS complaint you have cameras that alert you to cyclitst or pedestrians but not everyone has these.
Not necessarily cameras, my lorry is DVS compliant , but just has a side scan and front scan with two separate alarms that go off, thankfully no extra cameras because I find that very very distracting believe it or not, gazza285 said:

Big HGV nowadays have audio signals too. Not that it could do much if you are already beside the HGV.
Audio signals are also pretty useless if the driver doesn t turn them on."would she even have been aware of his indicator if he'd used it when she had already placed herself in such a compromised position"
Yes, she may have if they have audio signal too (which they do sometimes).
ISTR that it's a disproportionate number of women involved in these accidents. I suspect it's something to do with an erroneous perception of safety or keeping to 'rules' that put a cyclist in the gutter
Sliding up the inside of traffic is fraught with danger. Much better to go on the outside then take a very obvious position at the front of the traffic as if there were an advanced stop box for cyclists at every junction.

Have you ever commuted by bicycle? You'd never move if that was the way to do things. The truck driver was at fault. In addition if he's turning WHY didn't he make sure that it was clear. It's not rocket science.
Recently I was in the left lane turning left. Mid move I had to stop as a large tour bus drove straight upto me on my side of the road and just stopped there mouthing to me to 'MOVE'.
I had no idea what he was doing. If he had hit his left indicator maybe I'd have figured out he was making a 90degree turn left.
Plenty of cyclists there too - they wouldnt have no clue either what his plans were so they would have cycled up and over straight ahead. Putting them in danger.
When you are a commercial licence holder the theory is you have a higher level of driver training....

No one is disputing that the truck driver was at fault, more that there’s not much point being in the right if you’re dead.
In times of busy traffic when it queued back to that junction, you'd easily be several changes of lights if you elected not to filter on a bike. I can see why you would want to move up the line.
I wouldn't even be comfortable filtering down the left of cars on that section of road, never mind a truck.
Its clearly been found she wasnt in the blind spot and that, plus the lack of indication, meant the driver hadn't exercised due care. At the same time, the risk level of where the cyclist put herself is way higher than I would be comfortable with.
Its purely assumption, but I can't help but think she felt it was safe to proceed down the left as HGVs very rarely use Manse Road and this driver likely only chose to use it because of how slow the traffic was at getting through the lights at the cross that day.
Sad all round.
