XKR 4.2 tuning question
Discussion
I am considering a X150 4.2 XKR convertible. It has a stage 1 ECU tune - apparently to 470BHP and 650nm torque. This was done by Kent Tuning. This seems like high gains for a simple ECU tune. Does this sound realistic and is it likely to cause any engine or torque converter issues? Has anyone got experience with using that company? Any help is appreciated.
Tuner horses generally worth about 0.5 real horses, no it won't be comparable to a car that makes 470bhp to the ISO testing standards the OEs use but it will have made that much power as an instantaneous peak on a chassis dyno a couple of times.
The ISO standards for engine power testing are extremely rigorous, the car has to hold maximum power at a given RPM for a set amount of time but in actual real world testing it's often minutes at a time while everything settles down and the engineer drinks his tea. I'd love to see the tuner claims tested to that standard, if the engine didn't predetonate itself to death or have to pull the timing right back after a few seconds because it's heatsoaked.
I've seen tests of aftermarket tat from "respected tuners" like intake tubed designed by people thinking it's the 1950s and just making the tube smoother will make more power, intake side mods almost always reduce power output but get sold with absolutely fabricated claims.
If you're after more power look at the 5.0 XKR, the difference is much much more dramatic than paper figures suggest and you get other improvements like the continuously adaptive dampers. They do feel more like the car X150 should have been at launch.
FWIW much of the "wow" factor on remapped cars comes from removing various torque limits particularly at low engine speeds and low gears. I'm sure the OEM just put those there for laughs though...
