After spending some time in the Hampshire area, I'm afraid to say it knocks the socks of Essex in the cullinary stakes. Great pubs, great restaurants, great weather.
So I'm now on a quest to find a decent home cooked style Sunday Roast in the South East area of Essex , does it exist?
I'm fed up with cold, tastless Brewers Fayre sh*te.
There must be a good'un somewhere within 20 miles, any ideas peeps?

step 1) go to your local Butcher

step 2) buy whatever takes your fancy in the meat area

step 3) buy potatoes / vegetable selection / sausagemeat / stuffing from your local fresh produce shop.

step 4) walk into the area of your abode with the oven in it (should be downsatirs somewhere)

step 5) put meat & potatoes in the oven (remember to turn it on), leave till cooked. cook vegetables according to intructions any cookbook will give you.

step 6) invite someone round on the proviso they will do the washing up (girls are usually good for this).

jobs a good'un

There's your problem - try north of Chelmsford. There are plenty round here - although I must admit that we tend to have our Sunday roast at home except on the TVR CC meets when we go to the Forresters.

Can't beat home cooked roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding - and not the crispy individual ones - the proper stuff cooked in a large pan where it is part crispy and part soggy.

Secret of good roast potatotes - par boil first then roll in flour before coating in melted lard/butter before putting in the oven.

Shady - you had better invite yourself over mate - just leave your hairdressing friend behind

fair point well made. It's taken Hampshire for me to realise I live in a sh*tehole area.
It's too congested to move on a Saturday. When the weathers nice, you get Chav muppets from the East end coming down for a 'good ol knees up' and some cockles. The transport links are sh*te, with one road in and out.
the town centre has more Kosovan's than Southenders.

breath, breath,

I guess I wouldn't get a job at the local tourst office

Shall be moving when the times right

lard/butter

I par boil for 20mins then transfer to roasting tray, brush with olive oil and then in the over for an hour, turning and brushing with oil as you go. Come out nice and crispy with soft fluffy centers

Agreed though making your own is the way to go, They never give you enough meat when you eat out. I had to buy bigger plates at home as I couldnt get a whole leg of lamb on my other plates. + few taties, bit of veg and a pot of mint sauce

Same here in Sussex. Finding an open road for Trev to stretch his legs is virtually impossible.

Not much better down here in North Kent unfortunately. Went out yesterday for a proper roast at -what-is-said-to-be-a-nice-place and I got shrivelled up not-nice meat, and the comical thing was that the portion I received on my (nice big) plate, which filled about half of it, was the same size as the portion the kid in the group received on her little plate!

and breathe...

Oh Even better if you substitute the lard for the dripping saved from the previous roast dinner. Must mix your meats tho'.

There used to be a pub called 'The Old Fox' (I think), near Masham(??), Essex (I think not far from Billericay??)
Was a very old pub, very basic not very plush inside, traditional cask ales and fantastic food served in huge portions!
Not sure if they are still going but worth a search. Mid Essex bods should know??????
Cerby.
