Range Rover Registering an import in the U.K. Issues

Hello everyone, I was wondering if anybody could help me.

I’m looking at purchasing a Range Rover Classic 2 door. This is a South African import brought into the U.K. approx 12 months ago. All the taxes, duties etc have been paid and I’ve seen all the documentation and it all looks above board in that respect and I have spoken to the import company to confirm it’s ready for registering.

My issue is, when I went to view the car I could not find a VIN number stamped onto the chassis (looking behind drivers side front wheel on chassis behind the bolts that hold the steering box on). A couple of people have said they didn’t stamp every chassis on the old two doors I’m not sure how much truth is in that. The car has its VIN plate just under the bonnet.

My worry is that if the car gets inspected during the registering process and they search for a chassis VIN I’ll be stuck with a car that’s only good for a Q plate which is not viable for me.

Has anybody been in a similar situation? The import guy on the phone said they ‘might’ inspect it. I would like to purchase the car but I need to get around this hurdle. Perhaps the number was stamped in a different location?

The export ones were shipped in knock down form and the VIN is in a different place. Can't recall if it's on the crossmember but I'll ask a colleague where they are on the knock downs.
