Yes call me crazy but a friend has free accommodation there during hurricane season which means only flight cost is a risk if we need to cancel due to bad weather. Managed to grab a points deal so can cancel flights up to 24hr before for a minimal fee, however want to fly out another couple and wondering on the easiest way to do this whilst minimising cost of cancelling due to the weather.

Another BA points deal sounds convenient but had thought the account holder needed to be on the booking also. Else the obvious solution is a fully flexible ticket?

Odds are good. How many days is Miami international shut due to hurricane warnings each year? Genuine question but I’m guessing a handful. I’d chance it.

Given hurricane season is June through November (6 full mths) being concerned about closures is absolutely insane.

Having been in Florida when Irma, Helene and Milton made landfall and worked across the state, closures are rarely for more than a few hours and only get whole day closures when it’s majorly directly impacting

Irma was huge and flights at MCO only stopped for a day (IIRC) as it passed directly overhead

I agree with the others. A hurricane closure is very rare. More common is a diversion due to a large, slow moving thunderstorm. Still not very common though. I used to fly that route a lot. I'd not be worried.

We fly to the Caribbean every year around Sept/ October time which is peak Hurricane season.

We've only been delayed once a couple of years back and this was by a few hours, even on arrival in Antigua the weather was awful but we still landed. We're doing St Lucia in October.

Reference Miami BA do several flights a day, they also codeshare with American Airlines so I wouldn't worry too much they'll get you there.

We’re booking flights to Tampa for early September. Last year they had hurricanes but generally the odds are good.

I was due to leave Tampa early Oct last year and after Milton the airport was open within 48 hours. There were delays especially on long haul but I would not worry whatsoever. Miami is less exposed to storms than Houston, And many other east coast locations.
