Just starting to look for another car which will mainly do family duties and a daily for work, cant be ruinous to run even though it will only do around 6000 miles a year maybe a touch more.
Not much interesting around at this price point really but that is not a high priority.
Favourites so far are Passat B6, Merc C Class and some outsiders are the Mondeo and S max.
I would prefer Automatic but would bend for something more practical which the S max seems to be.
Would be ideal if 2 bikes would fit in it with the seats down, the S max may be good for this.
Anything else worth considering?

£4k will get you into a newer plated Zafira Sports Tourer (7 seat thing) Petrol or Diesel.

Or, even the Insignia C Estate, stupendous value for money I think, again get a much newer plate at this budget.

Not for everyone but they are too cheap to ignore, when on a tight budget...

Zafira Tourer does look interesting. I had forgotten about them.

£735 tax though which is a bit of a killer. I have similar requirements to the OP and the V70 ticks all the boxes but the thought of spending a quarter/fifth of the purchase price in tax each year puts me off!

I would have to agree, always fancied a Volvo though, im guessing the Diesel engines will be cheaper to tax but not sure on their reliability.

Plenty of SAAB 9-3 available, I've had a couple of bikes in mine when I had it.

I had a 9-3 Wagon and did like it, finding a good one is the issue. Prices are a bit silly on good ones which is why i ruled them out but worth keeping an eye on.

2.0T is a good engine and can be tuned nicely, I had the 2.8 V6 but the tax is a killer now.

What about a Skoda Octavia VRs - by all accounts even the hatch has a pretty big boot.

A lot of people suggesting very old cars or very high mileage cars which could go from £4k to 'very little' in a couple of years.
Could easily be a greater 'cost per year' than something a lot younger?
Trade in or private sale value will be derisory if you end up not wanting to keep it for very long.

Even if nothing goes wrong.

A lot of high tax and fuel consumption relative to the performance.

A lot of people suggesting things which are not estates.

It's actually quite tough finding a decent cheap estate.

A lot of the cars suggested are IMHO quite lacking in charm.

If you must take your chances in this market, you could consider an Alfa Sportwagon or a BMW.

I think decide whether diesel is viable or not?

And whether you want to take the risk of losing your £4k fairly quickly.

Maybe consider taking a punt on anything that looks credible for a year's use on facebook or Gumtree?

I would say £4k will get you something reasonable, I had my eye on a tidy looking 2010 Merc C 200 Estate with 87k miles on it yesterday but its gone this morning.
They are out there.
No real rush anyway, im happy to wait for something to come along.

Skoda Octavia in hatch or estate form.

I bought one a couple of weeks ago for my partner who is doing 600 miles a week commuting on the M5 for the next 12mths.
Having driven it back to Devon from Sussex it's the perfect tool for the job and it was so cheap that it doesn't matter how many miles it racks up.
Priorities were space, comfort - ride & seat, decent economy, cheap tax, small wheel size, cruise, climate & bluetooth.

The car I found -

2011 Octavia Elegance 1.6TDI
95k
1 owner
Full history with a folder of receipts
£35 tax
60mpg without trying.

And all for £1800spin

I'm another voter for an Octavia VRS, although estates are harder to come buy.
I'd also consider a Honda Accord Tourer (estate), with £4k should get you into one of the newer shape ones (58+).

We've also had a V70, which was a great car and very comfortable and I've had 3 x V50 Sport / R Designs, although it would depend how big an estate you wanted...

Yup, I've flown the Volvo estate flag for years and have had a V50 (or two) for the past ten years as a shed... and they aren't the biggest of things. It'll cope with day to day stuff but soon as you start adding buggies / bikes / bags etc then they start to feel a bit small. A P3 V70 would be the better choice I fear if you want to carry stuff. Though for carrying 2 x bikes, semi complete then you're really looking at something with a raised roof line to then allow them to go in vertically, albeit front wheels removed.

Probably doesn't sound the most exciting, but I've always been surprised by the competence and drivability of things like Skoda Yeti and the Citroen Berlingo. They're quite high up so it's quite easy to keep momentum as your visibility is so good. Think from a practicality standpoint it's probably quite easy to load a couple of bikes into the back of these?

One hundred and seventy one thousand miles. For 6000 miles a year you really think a stinky, worn out, hateful diesel is the right answer? No. No it is not. Scrap that piece of junk.
