Defender 110 Trophy Edition launched ahead of FOS

Want that OCTA vibe without the six-figure spend? Land Rover has you covered

Well, this was bound to happen. With a proper off-road halo model now atop the range in the shape of the V8-powered OCTA, Land Rover has opened the taps on other ‘expedition-ready specification’ Defender variants - specifically, in this case, the 110 Trophy Edition, which, as the name suggests, celebrates the manufacturer’s knack for far-flung adventuring.

If that puts you in the mind of Camel-branded, jungle-conquering Land Rovers of yesteryear, then you’re halfway there: the new Trophy Edition certainly looks the part, but aside from the introduction of new 20-inch gloss black wheels and Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure tyres, there is nothing much to boast about on the hardware front. You can’t have the new trim level with the V8 either - so there’s no chance of speccing your way to a cut-price OCTA.

But you absolutely can have the Trophy as a D350, and in fairness to the standard Defender and Land Rover, that pretty much means you’re buying the best (family-friendly) off-road car in the world anyway. So there’s certainly no shame in opting for either of the heritage-inspired paint jobs - there’s a choice of Deep Sandglow Yellow or Keswick Green - and embracing some flashy model-specific decals.

Elsewhere, you get a contrasting black finish on the bonnet, wheel arches, and undershield, Trophy-illuminated treadplates, model specific badging - plus, inside, the Defender’s distinctive ‘cross car beam’ is colour-matched with the exterior. Not quite as implicitly rugged as the 130 Outbound variant launched last year, with its cavernous, rubberised boot and nonsense styling - but appealing enough to the lifestyle buyers Land Rover is likely aiming at.

Much like the Outbound, for anyone hoping to go the whole hog - i.e. to mimic the cars you see in the pictures - you’ll need to option something called the Trophy Edition Accessory Pack, which includes items like the roof rack, the deployable roof ladder, the front and rear mud flaps, and the (still somewhat redundant) raised air intake. That’s £4,995 for the lot, including fitting, bringing the 110 Trophy Edition’s asking price up to £89,810.

No small chunk of change when you consider that an entry-level Defender S 350 starts at £66,965 and (tyres aside) will be no less capable of making impeccable headway the minute asphalt turns to dirt. On the other hand, if you want the version that really does go where no other Defender has been before - i.e. sideways on gravel - you’ll need to earmark £148,045 to get anywhere near the all-singing OCTA. The Trophy Edition being priced somewhere between the two probably says all you need to know about it.

I’m yet to see one covered in mud in the real world. Lovely thing still though and I’d buy one.

Ours is often covered in mud as my wife moans at me for not washing it whilst I think it’s important that at least one is seen which is used properly.

Best thing we’ve owned, used for boat towing and launching, travelling from Norfolk to North Yorks where it’s taken off road as often as possible. Fording abilities are superb so parts of it do get washed…

Agree, same detail here. The max wading depth is used at least a couple of times a week when the weathers bad over winter. I often say the same thing when people ask me how it’s been as a thing to live with, best thing we’ve owned.

More colour is always welcome on the Land Rover configurator, I'd have spec'd something like that yellow if it was available but joined the hoards in ordering Santorini Black. To be fair, a Defender will always look great in black but despite all the personalised bits I put on mine-it does just look like everyone else's black Defender hehe

I love that dark metallic red they launched the 130 in but a nice Camel yellow would have done me grand-white wheels an roof for the full retro look?

I get the practicality of the additional doors etc., but from a design point of view, I much prefer the look of the 90 cool

Unfortunately around these parts, even such trivial things as parking can turn into an event you become grateful for having a Defender (other, lesser 4x4 s are availablebiggrin ). Not flooded when we parked, 45 mins later, shin deep Hay on Wye for anyone interested. And also observant enough to question why the bottom half of the car park, even when not flooded in winter (yet), is always empty .! Clearly I didn t get the memo, the allure of nice empty spaces was too much.

D5 is better inside at use age of space but the Defender’s looks are always going to win the day for most.

So good it harks back to another BL innovative legend with that colour - Alleglow Yellow, the Allegro showing off the terrain on which the Defo is always seen too. 😆
V8 90 please.

My sister ran a D5 for 3 years and is coming towards the end of 3 in a 110 - and is broadly of that opinion. Given, her lifestyle isn't exactly backwoods, nothing filthy beyond saddles, boots, windsurfing gear...

As another poster noted, it's the looks that swing it, and the Defender was "the new thing" when the lease cycle came around.

Where do you live? Central London or similar?

For every high-spec luxury model I see at least one with evidence of dirty exploits.

I’m guessing that’s from extensive ownership experience of both models…

I’ve had a series 3 88”, 3.5 V8 RRC, Discovery 2’s, old defender, and now currently a new one. Even a dyed in the wool LR nut (I’d class myself as one) would have to be certifiably insane to say the previous generation Defender was “better” than this one. By every measurable and some not so measurable metrics the new one is better. It’s in a totally different league, including off road! When I want to remind myself what being hot, cramped, damp and vibrated to within an inch of my life feels like I’ll take the Caterham out. At least that will sit comfortably at 70ish on a motorway!
