2015 S212 E350. The fan on my heater / air-conditioning system had stopped working. It ran perfectly for a 45 minute journey today, with the a/c nicely cooling me from the 28 degree heat outside. About an hour later I start my return journey and the fan stops abruptly after about a minute. Switching to manual makes no difference. I checked both fuses and they looked OK, so continued home with the sunroof and windows open.
I turned off the a/c while still keeping the blower on manual, just in case it started up again. After about 5 minutes, I started to get some air through the vents, presumably due to the ram effect of travelling at 60 MPH. I switched on the a/c, and the ram effect breeze immediately stopped. I switched off the a/c, and about 5 minutes later, the ram effect breeze started again. I was able to repeat that cycle a couple more times.
Presumably, either the fan motor or resistor is kaput, but I don't know which. The loss of ram effect air with a/c on presumably suggests that flaps etc are still working somewhere behind the dash.
Anyone experienced this before?

Yep. Motor in both cases.
Easy to check if it’s the motor or the “resistor pack”.
Remove entire assembly (passenger side above footwell). Apply 12v direct to motor. If that works it’s the motor. Also check voltage going to pins on plug.
Note - if it’s the motor be very careful to get one for a RHD car. They are handed.

Thanks Dog Star.
Having heard of major, whole dashboard out jobs to replace blowers I was expecting the worst, but it turns out it is avery simple job indeed in a 212 Benz. Just unscrew the trim panel above the passenger footwell, disconnect a few wires, then twist and pull to remove the blower unit.
You can get cheapo Chinese blower units for about £39.99 but I avoided that and got one for £157.00. Apparently made in France by Mahle under licence from Behr, the original supplier. The same item in a Mercedes box is around £700.00. It took about 12 minutes to complete the whole job. Now nice and cool inside the car again.
