Tel Aviv’s defence minister has announced a “special situation” and confirmed Israel had carried out an attack.

Iranian state media reported an explosion north east of Tehran.

Witness reported plumes of smoke over the capital.

Israel has declared a state of emergency across the entire country.

Israel Katz, the defence minister, said schools would be closed in the country on Friday.

There was no immediate word on what was struck.

An unprovoked attack on a neighbour, yet "Israel declares emergency". rolleyes

I get that Netanyahu needs WWIII to keep himself in power and out of gaol.

But why have we thrown our lot in with these genocidal maniacs?

Or another way to look at it is a preemptive strike on a terrorist state that was increasing looking like developing a viable nuclear weapon within a matter of weeks.

Iran’s stated aim is to wipe Israel from the face of the earth, and they are perhaps weeks away from having the nuclear capability to do so. I would say that is the very definition of provocation.

The world is a very dangerous place at the moment, but having a terrorist state armed with nuclear weapons makes it even more dangerous. I started school in Iran and it’s a beautiful country with lovely people; lets hope they are given the opportunity to overthrow their rulers.

Some view having nuclear missiles as a deterrent, others want them as a weapon to use.

By 'terrorist state armed with nuclear weapons', do you mean Iran or Israel?

It was inevitable. The World cannot have a Nuclear armed Iran. Well done to Israel…sometimes talks just fail and you have to revert to military means.

I don’t suppose the first attacks will have eradicated the Nuclear threat so now the hard work begins. They have to finish what they have started. I don’t see any talks continuing.

At some point in the future I can see a collection of Muslim countries clubbing together and wiping Israel off the face of the earth. .
Depends if you are Sunni or Shi'a.
It seems that Israel is doing the dirty work for Saudi.

As usual everyone sitting safely here in the uk criticises Israel. Meanwhile Iran arms hezbolla and actively tries to make nuclear weapons.

Iran fund and train Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis so "unprovoked" is debatable . Whether it is wise is another matter as proxy wars may be less destructive than outright conflict.

I mean the state that is in the process of acquiring nuclear weapons in order that it can wipe another country of the face of the earth as a result of its hatred of Jewish people, but then I think you knew that. The other state has nuclear weapons in order to defend itself from the aforementioned threats from its neighbours.

And we'll all stand surprised when Iran hits back with, if they take the Israeli approach, overwhelming force.
