UK music retail chain PMT placed into administration, permanently closing all stores with immediate effect

What a shame. I've been to the Romford branch many times and bought various stuff from them.

Great people and a great shop will be missed.

Denmark Street of course but that's feel more like a tourist destination these days.

Anderton's is miles away from me but I want to visit just because of their YouTube videos.

Sad to hear this, I worked in a branch that closed a few years ago, when I was about 20.

So a long time ago now and to be fair it always felt like it was struggling then.

Still, a sad day and I feel for the guys who have lost their jobs.

Such a shame to hear this. I've been using the Birmingham store for years. It hasn't long moved to larger premises. Always great to deal with. Good luck to all the staff there and the other branches.

Sad news. Bought various bits and bobs from them over the years.

I always loved being able to go into physical music gear stores. When I was a teenager I used to love spending my weekends in my two local places, fiddling with synthesizers that I could only dream of being able to afford. Then, after getting my first job, spending all my money there and realising my dreams.

Funny.

A shame that PMT has gone though; like many I bought various things from them in the past (guitars, drum kit, etc.) but I suspect that they have fallen victim to on-line sales competition like so many other businesses with a significant (costly) physical presence.

That's the problem in a nutshell. People used to visit our stores to try stuff and then buy online at the cheapest price. We set up a box-shifting discount site to counteract this, and made sure the prices were the cheapest on the net. There is a significant amount of price-fixing by the manufacturers, so discounting stuff was frowned upon and could cost you in the future with higher purchase prices or restricted supply from them.

They had an online presence , what I observed though is for example they did not have as many sales as Andertons or guitar guitar and the sale offers were never as good ,

I have spent a small fortune in the Birmingham store over the past 3 years but sadly not enough to have kept them afloat.

I loved going-in though. That wall of guitars was amazing but it was never as good as Musical Exchanges was in the 1980s. Mostly the lack of a dedicated drum dept was a failing for me, although the drum tech/sales assistant did allow my lad to bash away on a £9,000 Roland electronic kit... which was a good ploy because I went back and bought one a year later (a model in the range that was about half that price).

We have also had two or three guitars from PMT too.

But it is true that their deals were never as keen as others you could find online.

Always loved the Birmingham store but imo it was never quite the same after it moved to the new premises a few years back.

Must have bought half a dozen guitars there over the years, the last being a Guild 12-string.

The car boot sales they used to hold were legendary too. Picked up so many bargains there over the years.

A sad day. I feel sorry for the staff, who were always excellent.

Agree that it isn't good to see these companies go under. Is it a diminishing market, or weren't they competitive?
Red Dog up here went out of business when they expanded into a bigger market. I guess a lot of people but stuff online without trying it out first.
I've done that once or twice but it is a bit risky if they send you a dud.
