A new series.

Why do people go to so much trouble to avoid paying the correct fare?

https://www.channel5.com/show/fare-dodgers-at-war-...

Tip for regular fare dodgers - don't wear the same clothes every day.

A friend of mine got busted some time ago for not paying on one of the trains he took every day into London, they basically made him pay about £2k in installments, that he owed in fares as they'd been tracking him for a long time. Could afford it but with no turnstiles on that train he just thought he could get away with it.

I've watched a couple of episodes of this.

Not sure how much those revenue inspectors get paid, but I doubt it's sufficient compensation for the amount of verbal and physical abuse they receive.

Why do people evade fares? Sense of entitlement, low chance of getting caught, no fear of the consequences? As one genius said when he was stopped at the gateline, "I'm not paying for transport" (or words to that effect).

Watched one last night, fare dodgers are self-entitled knobs!

Revenue Protection people... Well it's a good thing they clearly failed to get into the Police biglaugh they play very fast and loose with the way they stop people, I'm not sure everyone they talk too feels they are 'free to leave at any time', I might react poorly if they tried it on me, and I pay my fares!

I could tell you why quite easily...if I want to travel to London tomorrow from Bristol Parkway for a meeting and return the same day it will cost me..... £192.39. For a journey that's 80 miles and takes 1hr 15 mins.

That's the crime right there!

Oh dear!

I have just looked and it's £80 return to travel today.

Much cheaper, of course if it is 6 weeks hence.

Yep, and that's what I used to do for my commute into London, however those tickets are not flexible and non refundable, so if you can keep work organised 6 weeks in advance then ok, its still £80 though, which is still a criminal cost.

Similar going to London from Stafford, cheapest in around £100 return but a dog slow train, or an Avanti West Coast at around £250.

Not a socialist but certain things should never be privatised.

Instead need a competitive public sector. Pay based on performance etc.

It's hard to deal with people who think it's a lark [ isn't the train is going there anyway ? ] and not paying for a ticket isn't really breaking the law, bit like Sovereign Citizens in N. America.

I've been watching this series (which annoyingly wasn't on last night due to football) I find this type of show be fascinating. The arrogance of ticketless punters is outstanding! Those saying that they don't pay for travel need to have a word with themselves.

Good on the inspectors and security staff.

I think there were some mental health issues on display, part of dealing with the public, some of them are utter lunatics.

But, some just seemed to need a stout punch to the nose and to be asked "Do I have your attention now" ?

Because they're scrotes.

Just like people who shoplift, use dodgy firesticks, pretend they don't need a TV licence, use fake number plates, the list is endless as are the excuses for justifying their scrotey behaviour.

I’ve not seen this and have no intention of watching it, just appears to be one of those programmes aimed at getting the viewer froffing, much like traffic cops, night cops, motorway cops etc.

I don’t see the point, just paints the UK in a bad light. Like so many programmes on television. However having heard of the various complaints about train fares in ‘rip off Britain’ I thought I should see how exorbitant the fares are.

A few years back, visiting the UK, I needed to travel to Edinburgh to Southampton return, while hiring a car would be the cheapest option (I’m not going on the bus) knowing some drinking may be done, public transport it was. Train £160, Aeroplain £110, not exactly cheap for the train, so fly it was.

How much is it to commute in rip of Britain, I chose one example of what I thought would be an average commute into London, prepare to be horrified, Reading West →Charring Cross Rtn, 5 days per week, 3 month season ticket. Imagine my horror £562 per month

That’s an extortionate £25.97 Rtn a day, how dare they.

Here you go. My previous job there was talk of going fully back into the office, so I left, as going in once or twice a week was becoming unpalatable financially. Never mind the delays, cancellations, being left at Kemble station til 4:30am on night. But the season ticket cost.... without the additional car park charges.

So yeah, basically needing to earn an extra £30k just to pay for itself, absolutely criminal!

I had a look at train tickets for my parents so they could visit us when my dad couldn’t drive because of a bad leg.

The price (checking the price a few days before the travel date) from Birmingham to Reading (nearest they could get to us without having to make lots of train changes) £256 return!

That’s why there’s so many fare dodgers. Plus don’t help when they treat paying customers like they’re Potential Criminals. (Jackets with Revenue Protection on the back etc FFS!)

Fares are ridiculously high, but you know what they are before you go so not paying it is your choice and you risk a criminal record.

Your choice. Your responsibility. Pay the fare or get a bus, drive a car, or don't go.

Perhaps the fares are high because there are so many fare dodgers.

just checked on trainline and going tomorrow/back Sunday they quoted £116 for 2 adults. Straight through/no changes. 1h 36m.

Seems you actually buy 2 separate tickets but stay on the same train. Maybe worth seeing what they can do?
