Speed Cameras: Are They Out To Get You?

On tv channel 5 this evening at 8pm. Worth watching imo.
It was interesting in some respects but also a touch misleading in others. For example, it mentioned that here in North Yorkshire we have no fixed speeding cameras (which is true) but that seemed to morph into the county not using speed cameras which is absolutely not the case - it does (and quite extensively), it's just they're mobile rather than fixed! I also found it a bit light on analysis. For instance, when they were talking about the different approach Wiltshire had taken compared to neighbouring counties it would have been nice to see some comparative data on things like the level of KSI's to show what effect that policy had had; does Wiltshire's policy mean they have lots more accidents - with more people killed or seriously injured as a result - or is their rate of KSI's not significantly different from the neighbouring counties who use cameras extensively? No mention of that in the programme which I thought was disappointing.
It did however show an example of a Traffic Officer exercising her discretion and choosing not to take further action against someone who was slightly over the speed limit but recently bereaved and obviously upset. The sort of common sense you wouldn't get with a camera...

It may have been that but it's not any more and I can't actually remember what it is now. Credit where it's due though he does actually know what he's talking about but unfortunately it's his attitude that annoys people, but that could be said about quite a few posters.

I'll hazard a guess that the answer would be embarrassing to so many people and institutions that it was avoided. A bit like telling people in 1650 that God didn't exist.Simpo Two said:

A bit like telling people in 1650 that God didn't exist.When I last looked at it for North Yorkshire the effect of their mobile camera fleet on the county’s KSI statistics had been the square root of naff all. To be fair it’s been a couple of years since I last checked the numbers but I doubt they’ll have changed much.
So I suspect your guess probably isn’t too far wide of the mark!
