Government announces first EU airport that will allow Britons access to e-gates

Faro Airport in Portugal will open up its e-gates to Britons from "this week", the government has announced.

Speaking in the Commons, Cabinet Office minister Nick Thomas-Symonds said: "The historic deal that we signed with the EU on 19 May is in our national interests, good for bills, borders and jobs.

"It slashes red tape and bureaucracy, boosts British exports and makes life easier for holiday.

"Indeed, I'm delighted to confirm, this morning that, Faro airport in Portugal will start the rollout of e-gate access to UK arrivals this week."

More b*llocks from the Government, I used the e-gates at Athens Airport last May (2024) and Paphos last July.

I’d wager Faro was chosen because of this, and similar stories about what a stshow Faro Airport has been for ages.

Many will also tell their own stories about using e-gates around Europe (EU states)

Just check out any airports you plan on using before travelling, I’m not aware of any websites that detail which Airports have e-gates.

CdG have them. Unfortunately you all get crammed into a catttle crush for an hr before you get to them.

The vast majority of the time around Europe they make not a difference to the time it takes to get through.

We used them at Lanzarote late last year.

You did have to get the passport stamped after, but it was a formality after having passed through the e-gate.

CDG... When it runs on time T3 inbound is ok and security etc is pretty quick. But if multiple aircraft land at the same time then you are queuing out of the door.

Outbound it's ok and last time I was joking the the border control that they wanted to see my carte d'identité as I had so many stamps (I speak French as well). Once I had to exit departures to return to Paris due to a 10 hr flight delay and they couldn't have been more helpful.

Those with a penchant for tin foil millinery might wonder if greater alignment and interoperability with such EU systems is designed to ease the path of the forthcoming global digital ID ['papiere, bitte'] plans.

I consider myself to be utterly grateful that I rarely have to cross the threshold of CdG, for never have I had a pain free experience of the place. I consider it a loathsome place. Helpful is never a word I associate with CdG.

As someone who travels a bit in Europe most of the countries have eGates for non EU people but for one reason or another (EU bloodymindedness?) don't use them. Last visit to Amsterdam was a complete shambles. All the none EU passport holders were held and then released in small numbers. A lot of tourists especially the sceptics were not impressed. It took over 50 minutes. BUt the NL doesn't want more tourist, so maybe they do this to restrict numbers. It was worse than a 3rd world country.

Faro have had e gates for years. They’re rarely switched on. The key to getting more people through Faro is to man all of the passport booths (doh) - I think there are six and I’ve never seen more than four operational. They’re supposed to be drafting in more PSP (passport police iirc) staff this year. Not holding my breath…
