Insurance Question
Discussion
Hello!
I would be grateful if anyone could advise on this...
My friend has a high powered road legal sports car and is now banned from driving for reasons we won't go into but it's going to be for 18 months.
He is asking me is i would like to drive his car, he would pay the insurance and i would drive. He still get's to go to events in it and listen to that lovely sound and the car in no stat stationary months on end.
Would the best way / cheapest way / only way be for me to insure it under my name. He's obviously the owner and registered keeper, how would this effect things?
the owner and registered keeper are two different things are they now?
What's people's thoughts on this? I'm really not sure what the best route is?
Thank you

Can't you just be a named driver on his policy?
Given the OP's friend is banned from driving I doubt that is a possability.I wouldn't get involved personally, if the really unfortunate happens at best you will be reamed for your own car insurance at worst that happens and you and said friend fall out over it plus other unforeseen consequences.
If you are going to do it then get insurance in your name, there is a section about who is the registered keeper usually. Might be worth getting through a broker rather than a comparison site etc
Just play around with the comparison sites...
You may struggle though. I don't think you will get a reasonable quote for you as a named driver on his policy, I am guessing insurance providers wont provide a policy for banned drivers.
I think many insurers don't like to insure you on a vehicle when its not yours and you are not the registered keeper, although I am sure some will. I imagine it will be more expensive, but this is the way to do it

No doubt the owners premium quoted ( assuming he can even get a quote ) will be somewhat expensive and then adding you as a Named driver might actually lower that.
However as a now banned driver he will struggle to actually get Insurance although at the very least he needs and should get “laid up cover “ to at least protect his value in the event of Fire or Theft.
If he isn’t bothered about money then that’s his call whether to insure or not btw as a driver in terms of the laid up risk.
Comparison sites algorithms won’t be able to even look at this so as stated already you or they need to speak to a broker and outline the full details.
Only then can you begin to think what option ( if any ) makes the most sense for you both.

This last paragraph. In my opinion, I imagine they would not want to insure a driver who has no ‘skin in the game’, that is, someone who, as the driver, is neither the owner nor the registered keeper. You may struggle though. By all means search around on websites, but that may just end up giving you an excuse to say ‘sorry mate, too expensive/impossible’. If you do say that - don’t give him an excuse to come back with a ‘what if I …?’ response.
You driving a "high powered road legal sports car" and the registered keeper has an 18 month ban?
You would forever be being pulled to check your details and probably have to prove your identity.
Also with the "high powered road legal sports car" showing as insured it might also be very tempting for your friend to sneak a solo drive out occasionally.

Presumably because the "owner" has been banned (18 months!) and he won't have a current insurance policy?
Surely unless it's a banger it would still need cover, simply because of the threat of being stolen?OP, just remember as well that if you already have a car insured in your name, you won't get any NCB applied to the second car in your name.
I think this is just one of those things where it's just easier to say no.
18 months isn't the worst amount of time for a car to be out of action, the engine can be started and warmed up, it can be driven back and forth on a drive way to keep things moving.
If it is indeed a road legal track car, then maybe look at a trailer and take it to a track every couple of months, that should keep everything moving quite well.
Not sure if your mate would be allowed drive though, maybe someone else can answer that.

He is willing to put me as the registered keeper but obviously that adds another 2 registered keepers total when transferring it back to him in future so not ideal.
