Normally (on a PC) if I delete photos by mistake I use image recovery software to get them back.

Can it be done on a phone? There's no SD card so they must be/were in the phone itself. If I connect the phone to my PC via USB lead it sees the phone as an icon but that's all; I can't browse to a folder as per the old days.

Android or Apple? On Android you can get to the recycle bin from one of the menus in the Gallery

On an iPhone deleted photos remain in a "Recently Deleted" folder for 30 days unless you empty it manually.

Android. Ah yes, there they are. All restored!

Now how to get them into my PC?

Just use a USB cable, and let the phone connect in file transfer mode.

Slightly to my surprise I managed to find that (I'm a complete numpty with phones) and there they all were. Thanks!

If your phone can take an SD card it's a good idea to put one in and and set the phone so that it saves to the card not the phone's memory.
We had an old Samsung phone die on us during a 2 month tour of NZ. It had many pics on it. Even when we returned and I connected it to my PC the phone would not come to life.
Fortunately it was set as detailed above, so put the card into my card reader and still had all the pics

Until it's the SD card that dies???

far better to use a cloud service for your backup storage.
