Toyota says latest GR Corolla will be built in UK

Doesn't mention whether or not you will be able to buy one yet - but fingers crossed, eh?

Toyota has confirmed that it will produce GR Corollas at its Burnaston plant from next year. Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK has been selected to make the hot hatches ‘on the basis of manufacturing capability and motorsport expertise’. A welcome bit of good news for car making in the UK, which needs the fillip more than ever. Last October, the five-millionth UK-built Toyota left Burnaston.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the manufacturer has seen ‘increasing market demand’ for the GR Yaris’s big brother, and therefore wants to make more of them to satisfy that demand. Prep has been underway since last year ahead of going online in ‘26, so clearly this surfeit of interest has been underway for a while. Plus, don’t forget, Burnaston is already Toyota’s European hub for the Corolla; while the GR is a very different prospect to the average hybrid hatch, it is obviously easier to kit out a facility for a flagship of an existing model than start from scratch.

Yoshihiro Nakata, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe, said: “We are proud that TMUK, our first plant in Europe, has also been selected as the first overseas Toyota plant to produce GR vehicles, securing this expansion project for TGR worldwide. We very much appreciate the historical support and recognition of the United Kingdom and would like to continue to contribute to UK society as a ‘Best in Town’ company.”

All very nice. But Toyota hasn’t forgotten about the most important part of this announcement from a PH perspective: it puts a GR Corolla production facility much closer to those people who want to buy them. Today’s release says the move ‘reflects Toyota’s efforts to optimise its global production footprint to produce and deliver vehicles to customers as swiftly as possible.’ While there are always regulations and emissions to think of - look at how many GR Yarises can now be sold against just a few years ago - it’s easy to imagine a good few interested parties for an official, UK-supplied and built 300hp Corolla. Even if it had to be a £50k-plus prospect. We just have to hope that this isn’t like the Swindon-built Civic Type Rs of old, where the best versions were assembled here and only sold in Japan. We’re told to expect details how many GRs will be made in Derbyshire and where they'll be sold at a later date. Keep your fingers crossed…

Great news, I dont know how popular they will be if the price is similar to the facelift GRY. Could expect £50k+.

I saw a new shape Corolla on the road the other day in silver and did a double take. One of the few new cars that actually looks good and different, and I'm not usually a fan of Japanese car design. If the GR model comes to the UK and is priced right, it should do well. Not many options in the mid-sized hot hatch category these days.

Have always liked the shape of these, and given the limited number of alternative new cars available that appeal to me, it would be great to see this in the UK smile.

Agreed. They still look fantastic despite coming to market in 2019 (I think).

We have a 2.0 hybrid GR Sport in the household, and while it’s a completely different prospect to the full GR, it’s a really nice car to drive. Well built, reliable (of course) and has a ride quality that seems leagues ahead of its direct competitors. Fully independent rear suspension (double wishbone?) is very evident in the handling.

And a 10 year warranty is a no brainier. Well done Toyota UK and Burnaston smile

If they made these RHD I would probably change my FK8 for it. Yaris is too small for me but the rolla would be perfect.

The yaris is too small for many of us, so surely knowing the UK is rather fond of a 4wd hot hatch and as they will be made up t' rooaad, they'd be nuts not to reconsider UK sales.

With the mk1 yaris now a good few years old with owners maybe getting itchy feet would be good timing but whether that would harm mk2 sales as it couldn't be too much over £50k surely (FL5 struggled to sell hence mid 40's for a new one) its a conundrum for them for sure

Funding permitted Id take the 5 door over my Yaris. Just for convenience. Also think they look a little better.

Presumably if the GRY is Euro compliant this can be too as it shares pretty much the same running gear.
I imagine the issue of UK sales is one of the EV mandate quotas, having said that, Toyota don't exactly have many EV presently so why not?

Toyota have correctly predicted that only around 30% of cars globally will ever be EV. That leaves them to clean up a large portion of the remaining 70% of ICE vehicles that continue to get made. Unlike our legacy European manufacturers who threw everything into the EV folly and are mostly now trying to backtrack to some extent.

One day the penny might actually drop too with our great and honourable leaders. You know, old-fashioned stuff like listening to your electorate.

I wanted to say no to that rear, but somehow it looks cool.

ok 3 exhaust is a bit much, but somehow it can have it, although some like a tow hook? on their car, so...

Presumably tariff driven, as they will be able to export to US using the UK tariff on cars (10%) not the Japanese tariff (25%)

Don't worry, there's tons of options to make it more subtle...

Love the GR Corolla. The perfect family performance car. So much better than the Yaris with its unusable back seat.
PLEEEEEASE sell it in UK Toyota....
