What's happened to my exhaust?
Discussion
Bought a new (to me) Yamaha MT-10 today. It’s a 2016 model that’s only done 3k miles and is immaculate so happy with the bike itself. However, it’s stupid loud and I’d like to quieten it down a bit.
This is the exhaust

I can only assume it’s the same as this:
https://crescent-moto.co.uk/products/yamaha-akrapo...

So is the bit that’s missing the baffle/db killer? Did it ever have one? I’d prefer not to replace the whole silencer, just want to make it a bit quieter.
Don’t really know what the options are so suggestions welcome.

Have a look to see if a baffle is fitted, it will look like https://www.drbikes.co.uk/product/yamaha-mt-10-abs...
Is the catalyst in place? If so it shouldn't be loud regardless of the end can fitted (unless the catalyst has been gutted). Most sound dampening is done there.
If it's been removed, reinstall it.
Other than that your only options are to fit a larger end can. Make it as long and as wide as you can stand and keep the baffle fitted.

No, it doesn’t have one and no hole drilled so one can be fitted. It’s a genuine Yamaha accessory (90798-34001-00) says “fully street legal” on the Yamaha web site which I find hard to believe. It’s really loud!Tonberry said:

It has an Akrapovic link pipe installed which, according to my research makes it quite loud. I bet it was expensive but old ladies point and babies cry when I ride up the road. If it's been removed, reinstall it.

Thought so, that's your problem.Get rid of the link pipe and find a used catalyst. Or find an exhaust longer than 400mm or so ( it'll still be loud at higher rpms).
I’ve got the same exhaust set up on my MT-10. I decatted it last year and it’s loud, but was fine before. There is no baffle for the end can,as you say it doesn’t have the hole drilled to bolt it in place. I did buy one that I wedge in for the MOT, it would get an advisory at best without it.
If you want to sell the akrapovic link pipe when you’ve put a cat back on then I’m open to buying it. You’ll need some gaskets to seal it up fully. I’ll see if I can find the part code from the two spares I’ve got in the garage.

I'd fit a baffle first - if it's been decatted you'll lose some character refitting one. If the baffle doesn't do the trick then you can move on
You can t. The end cap doesn t have a hole to secure the baffle. It s a titanium end can, so not easy to drill your own. If they pass it for Germany it has to have a baffle which is permanently fixed in place, some have little welded tabs, but some they just hide the fixing behind the cover and rivet it

Doesn't it require the rivets drilling out and the end of the can removing? My current HP Corse can on the Tuono is like that.

Not sure if there’s an internal baffle, but an external one looks like the photo below. That is a perfect fit, as I’ve got that exact one and wedge it in if I ever absolutely need it. However it will blow out at anything other than midrange revs. If they pass it for Germany it has to have a baffle which is permanently fixed in place, some have little welded tabs, but some they just hide the fixing behind the cover and rivet it

There isn’t a hole for the fixing and drilling one, even with the end cap off is challenge as there’s no clear route to do it. Plus you’re drilling through titanium. The issue is the removal of the cat and replacing it with a link pipe. It is loud and unnecessarily so if I’m being honest.
This is what he needs if he wants to drill the end cap rivets out and replace the original end cap with this one that has the hole pre drilled. It comes with a baffle and the new rivets that he’d need.

I could refit the cat, but it’s a faff as I don’t have one or any of the parts that go with it like the cables for the ex up valve. Will report back when I’ve done this, but I’m hopeful.

To close this off. The photos below show the inside of the exhaust, which doesn’t appear to have an internal baffle, the external removable baffle that fits, but can’t be secured in place, what it looks like partially inserted and finally the fitment gasket for securing the cat in place if it’s refitted. The part number is 5YU-14714-10 You’ll need two of these.
