The most boring topic on earth....

Our old Hotpoint has decided to finally die after 10 years service.

Its mostly used for washing but in winter we do use the dry from time to time. It does not have a steam outlet - just uses the normal plumbing.

I am looking at £399 for another hotpoint. Samsungs seem to be 500-600. Bosch closer to £1k.

I would ideally like something quieter than our old machine - on spin its basically like being on a 757 taking off....

Anyone got one of these newer direct drive machines? Anything good to report?

Samsung probably has the best warranty, if it’s the all inclusive five year one. They generally last longer than Hotpoint.

Some lower end Bosch ones aren’t great, but would be equivalent to Hotpoint.

I think they’ll all be heat pump dry now, which takes anything from 15 to 100% longer to dry depending on how naff the design is.

I usually say washers cost £100 a year…..

Do the Samsungs still eat the drum spiders or have they got beyond that?

I recently had to replace a 20 year old Hotpoint washer dryer, and replaced it with another Hotpoint (Hotpoint NDB9635WUK).

Assuming it's levelled properly, the new machine doesn't vibrate and is very quiet compared to the old one. The old one would be very noisy on the fastest spin, which was only 600 (I think), whereas I barely notice this one on its fastest spin of 1200, if I'm in a different room.

I have an LG direct drive one, don't know the model number as not at home. It's much quieter than previous Hotpoint one and so far, 4 years, it's working fine.

I bought the same machine for £380 about a month ago. My previous 20 year old Ariston machine locked it’s door and I decided trying to self repair was not worth it. I only use it a couple of times a week and only use the dry function for towels. It’s very quiet even on dry function. The control knob seems flimsy, that’s my only doubt.

Cheers have looked at a few LGs and they look pretty good for the money.

I bought an 11kg LG washing machine and it is virtually silent, off the back of that my dad bought a 10/6kg LG washer dryer and it is a real decent machine. Quiet and has the ability to actually dry the clothes in the machine, unlike my previous hot point washer dryer.

To be fair, my old Hotpoint (around 20 years old) didn't get things fully dry in one go, but would after a second round of drying. The new one gives three options, from damp to bone dry and ready to put away, and seems to work pretty well.

I know Hotpoint are considered a budget brand, but my last washer/dryer lasted c20 years, and the cooker, fridge and freezer I bought at the same time, are all still going strong.

Avoid Bosch like the plague. We have an integrated one and it's been the constant thorn in my backside with something or other going wrong.

Cheers, went to have a look at some today, the LG does seem good value but the Mrs has her eye on Samsung now.

In which case relax and let the Mrs debate the pros and cons of each make on Mumsnet smile

Had a Samsung Washer & very quiet on a spin cycle. Also had the AddWash flappy door feature which I found very helpful but unsure if this is available on combi Washer/Dryers . . .

Another happy LG washer dryer customer here. Had a Beko which failed after 2 years, LG is now past that age and going strong. Pretty quiet, good program selection (plus a downloadable option). I particularly like the 39 minute wash cycle for small/medium loads, got it on just now!

With the LG app - do most machines have that or is it part of this Think Q thing?

I know it’s not a washer/dryer but after years of Hotpoints just going about their job we switched to Bosch. We went for a heat pump jobby and it’s fking st! Not only does a load take five hours to dry but it now absolutely stinks because it obviously doesn’t get hot enough to kill off bacteria and stop mould growing and they didn’t fit this particular model with a self-cleaning program.

We also have a Bosch dishwasher and that shat water all over my brand new kitchen after just two weeks.

I’m not a fan. I get the feeling that a lot of German brands are trading on past reputations for reliability, much like their cars.

ThinQ. Most if not all the current models have it. The good news however if it is very much an extra, not essential so you don’t have to mess with your phone just to put the washing on.
