I have an F90 M5, I’ve had it 3 years, love it and intend to keep it for some time. I’ve kept it under the insured warranty but can’t seem to find how many years I can maintain the warranty cover before renewal is not available. Does anyone know the answer please?

My old 2006 M6 was under BMW insured warranty from when the initial warranty expired until I sold it about a year ago if that helps. Move to monthly and the price should stay at that level (bar inflation rises) forever, so no nasty jump at 60k miles.

Thanks - yes I’ve moved to monthly for the reason you give.
It’s 6 years old now, I’d like to keep it another 4-5 years so it sounds as though I should be able to keep it under warranty.
Thanks for the reply.

Bit off topic - what’s the consensus on whether f90 m5s need a warranty or are they fairly reliable?

Mines done just over 60k now, it’s needed a coolant header tank, some sensors and some coolant pipes replacing under warranty, I’ve had a couple of software updates but otherwise totally reliable.
I see £100 a month as money well spent for peace of mind however, a new engine would surely be north of £35k…

It's the things you don't think about that get expensive as the car ages, I had a new HUD at one point as it stopped working, but also things like suspension components which certainly will need replacement at some point. The the last year of me owning it, it paid out £14k.

For bills like a new engine do the warranty co's ever write a car off as in an accident insurance claim?

I believe I read on a forum somewhere in the past it's upto 100k miles but I stand to be corrected.

Warranty pays up to the price paid for the car, so if you bought an M5 at £12k and wanted a new engine for £25k, you would need to pay the difference. The current value of the car does not come into it, just the price you paid.

The claim limit is for all claims in a 12 month period though. Their material was not clear on this, so if you max the claim limit you'll need to wait a while before you can claim again (even if you have just renewed).

Just to confirm the warranty can be renewed up to 100,000 miles regardless of age.
Once past 100k the warranty coverage can only be based upon the drive train - engine and gearbox.

That's not correct. My CSL is on 108k and still has the fully comp, zero excess warranty inc roadside assist in place. It's £106 per month.

The warranty also covers wear & tear upto 100k miles.

I called Allianz yesterday and was verbally told what I’ve posted, I also requested it in writing - see below..
Do you pay your warranty by monthly payment? if so I suspect you’re benefiting from them not checking the mileage and therefore offering the full warranty, similar to the benefit of monthly pay with the step up in cost once the 60,000 mileage threshold is exceeded.

Good Morning,

Thank you for your email.

The BMW insured warranty does not have an age limit.

We have three levels of cover, under the first 2 the comprehensive and named component, this can be purchased up to 100,000 miles.

The third level of cover the driveline can be purchased at any point and would be limited to this cover after 100,000 miles.

Kind regards,

Also in their FAQs

I think if you bought the warranty under 100k then you get full cover, if you bought it after this time then.....

If your vehicle has completed more than 100,000 miles, then you’re still able to take out a BMW DriveLine Warranty. This policy protects the main components that contribute to the engine, transmission and drive-train of your BMW, and is available to all vehicles – regardless of mileage.

There is no upper age limit for this policy. However, to take out Comprehensive Cover, your vehicle must have completed under 100,000 miles at the time the warranty is purchased.

Out of interest how would you prove what you paid for the vehicle if it was years ago and a private sale? I’ve kept the autotrader advert screenshot. I’m fully aware that the engine replacement in our 2018 X5M is write of territory and is the primary reason I pay the monthly warranty.

Ah, right. Get on the monthly then, before 60k if poss - the cost does not increase post 60k on the monthly as it does with the annual policy.

On a related note, what’s the deal with where servicing requirements? Does it have to be main dealer or a proper independent with genuine parts etc acceptable?

VAT registered garage with OE spec parts iirc keep all receipts.

When I had my M6 serviced I told them I bought all the parts (all genuine BMW parts) and they said to me to keep all receipts incase they needed to check incase of warranty work. (This was at BMW Warwick, Rybrook at the time.)
