As part of my track day business, I'm purchasing a Caterham 7 next week. I'd like to be able to hire it out for use on the road, but I am struggling to find self drive hire insurance. Is anyone able to recommend any companies or solutions?

I've called the following so far: Adrian Flux, Alan Boswell, ERS, Kingfisher, Arkwright, Footman James and Lancaster Insurance.

I’ve some significant experience in Self Drive Hire and I’ve found the best in the business currently to be Howden Insurance Brokers.

A word of caution however. Be very careful going down the route of SDH to the public with only one vehicle as it’s frought with issues…

For example;

You’re running a hire-desk and someone returns a vehicle damaged which needs to go into the menders to be put right. That vehicle was due out tomorrow to someone else. Fine, not a problem, you just switch the unit out to something else available (as you might have another six or eight free) and problem solved. Maybe even sell it in as a free upgrade. Job sorted.

With one Caterham, Mr. Smith brings it back and he’s ripped the side off it by accident, and Mr. & Mrs. Miggins have hired it tomorrow for their holiday in the Lakes, and you don’t have a switch unit immediately available, then you’re in for a whole world of pain. Mr. & Mrs. Miggins then will come after you big-style as you’ve failed their weeks holiday away. They’ve paid for their hotel upfront - they’d like full reimbursement. They’ve arranged to see a theatre show - they’d like reimbursement. The list is endless and that’s before they put their Compo faces on.

Just something to bear in mind. Road risk insurance is the easy part. It’s the hassle that goes with it…

We can do SDH insurance, but none of our facilities cater to single vehicles, we need at least 5 vehicles in the fleet.

I wish I could be more help on this one.

Caterham 7(s) flip real easy in the hands of inexperienced drivers.

Not sure I'd be hiring one out to 'Mad Dave' and sleeping too well at night.
