Hi folks,

I’m due to do a road trip from Shrewsbury to Dunns in Scotland this Thursday for the Jim Clarke Rally.

Im planning to do the trip in my Westfield and I’d like to split the northbound journey somewhere between Manchester and Carlisle with a hotel stop over. Does anyone with local knowledge know of any hotels between those areas close to the M6 which have secure covered parking?

I’ll need fuel every 150 miles so any decent stops close to a fuel station that sells 99 ron will also help!

Long shot I know but thanks in advance for any advice on the trip.

bp tickle trout at Preston - its a fill up i use often – junc 31

from there you could probably make Tesco Carlise (junc 43) which sells momentum but I don’t know the Ron number

its an issue I used to face often with only a 19l tank on a bike going to Scotland

not so much now the bike was changed for one with a 30l tank

hotels not so sure but could you not do it in a day it’s not that far?

There is a Holiday Inn in Bolton that has some underground parking. It's been refurbished recently and won't take long to get to the M6 from there. I think it's an additional £5 per day for the parking but maybe give them a ring to make sure the underground parking is available on the day.

Thanks folks, really appreciate the help.

I could do it in a day and have a few times in the camper. This trip will likely be along the A7 from Carlisle and I'm hoping to enjoy it so I'd like to be fresh for it rather than after a 3 or 4 hour slog along the M6. It also extends a nice trip by a night in a a hopefully nice place.

I've been recommended the Travel Lodge, Kendal Town centre as that has underground parking with a shutter on overnight which sounds ideal. Just booked that. Been to the lakes plenty of times but never Kendal so I'll have an explore and then may even try to find a none motorway route from the Tickled Trout to Kendal. Google says either A6 or A59 then A65. Any advice on either of those?

The A6 north from Preston isn't exciting driving IMO until after Lancaster. The A59 likewise until after Clitheroe. Plenty of nice roads through the trough of Bowland but they may be slow.

you could go along the a59 to gisburn up to the a65 then to settle then to hawes, back on yourself to sedbergh then to kirby stephen, brough, middleton, stanhope, corbridge a68 to the a69 to a698 to duns

bit of a trek i guess but if you're not in a rush and the weather is good its really nice, sheep and tea shop hunters a plenty but easily dealt with

its 97 at tickle trout as i found out the other day not 99
