iPhone Contactless Payments... getting in a stew...
Discussion
I will admit I have been slow in using my iPhone to make contactless payments instead preferring to use my trusty credit card with cash back up.
Anyway nowadays I have manned up and leave the house without my wallet just my phone (don't even print boarding passes anymore, all there in my wallet!). Building up my confidence that this new fangled tech won't let me down but have had my confidence knocked...
(1) Yesterday at the coast managed to get a parking space someone was vacating with many cars circling wanting it (hurrah). Ticket machines cashless only, no issue as I had my phone. Anyway I messed up paying, once as I had entered my VRN wrong so pressed cancel and the second time I was getting an odd beep from the machine and payment failed as FaceID didn't recognise me with sunglasses on. Finally got my act together but all payments then failed but no CC back up or cash option...
(2) At Sainsburys I noticed as I paid using my iPhone the PoS device said "£100 maximum by contactless".
Now my question relates to point (2), I had been told that paying by iPhone was unlimited amount so why did it say £100 maximum? Are other places £100 maximum? I don't want to fill up with fuel or otherwise spend more than £100 then find when paying I can't. Must I take a credit card with me as well as my phone as I used to? What am I missing?

I use my iPhone and ApplePay for everything... ApplePay on the iPhone doesn't have a limit (unless maybe your bank or card issuer has imposed a limit on your account?).Now my question relates to point (2), I had been told that paying by iPhone was unlimited amount so why did it say £100 maximum? I spent £8k on a shotgun last year.... 'ping' instant payment on the phone.
So I think there must have been an issue with Sainburys.

The Tesco fuel station at Hookwood (near Gatwick) only accepts payment at the pump and the pump only takes cards. I only carry my phone for payments so have given up trying now. It tends to be the cheapest place around too, which makes it even more frustrating.
Yeh the Tesco near us in MK is the same, so I go to the pumps you can pay in store at now if I dont have my cards with me. I haven’t used a wallet in 5 years or more
The times I got caught out recently was at M&S when they had a cyber hack take down their contactless payment, but I managed to use their “scan and shop” where you pay though the app instead.
The other time was at a food festival where all the stalls bar the Welsh cake one took card, I wanted some Welsh cakes and just ended up buying them from another stall about 20 ft away.
Lucky also I bank with NatWest so you can get cash out of a NatWest or Tesco cash machine.
No limits to Apple Pay as said before.

Never carry a wallet or cards anymore, I use Apple Pay for everything and haven't hit any issues with contactless limits, definitely been over the £100 mark on many occasions, as others said I believe that only applies to contactless cards. Used to be Android and similar experiences with Googlepay
Hmmm thanks all.
Having finally caught up with the 21stC and only taking my phone out with me, I will now revert back to the 20thC and carry my wallet too as ApplePay isn't always accepted.
Technically I do not understand it: ApplePay shows my credit card (when I click the button on the side of the phone twice and FaceID it) so effectively I am using my credit card right? SO why is ApplePay turned down in some places (like the car park machines I used in my first post) ?

So annoying as they have just upgraded to brand new pumps at my local one... still don't take contactless payments though. So daft. Scarletpimpofnel said:

I don't think ApplePay exposes your car card numbers etc, from AIHaving finally caught up with the 21stC and only taking my phone out with me, I will now revert back to the 20thC and carry my wallet too as ApplePay isn't always accepted.

"Apple Pay protects your cards by using a unique Device Account Number (DAN) instead of your actual card number for transactions. The DAN is encrypted and stored securely on your device, and not shared with Apple or the merchant. Additionally, Apple Pay uses a secure, certified chip called the Secure Element to store your payment information.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Device Account Number (DAN):
Instead of sharing your actual card number, Apple Pay creates a unique DAN that is specific to your device. This DAN is used for all transactions."
It will be your card issuer or the retailer setting the contactless limit, not Apple Pay.
Should you need to spend more than their contactless limit then Apple Pay will issue a challenge on your phone or fingerprint or Face ID.
Most fuel retailers seem to have a £100 or £120 limit regardless of payment method.

Ok ty. So despite the PoS device saying £100 max, if my shopping exceeded that then I could have still used my phone but would have got extra steps?Should you need to spend more than their contactless limit then Apple Pay will issue a challenge on your phone or fingerprint or Face ID.
