109th Indianapolis 500
Discussion
Hi all, thought I'd do a separate thread for the big race, qualifying and race schedule below - you'll have to convert to UK times.

Really looking forward to this one, I love the qualifying almost as much as the race itself. Just seen Colton Herta had a big shunt and flipped over, almost identical to his 2022 crash.

Oh dear, big crash for Scott McLaughlin in morning practice, looks doubtful for qualifying. Shame as he was one of the quickest guys out there.

Gouged a hole in the track surface. https://youtu.be/9rkWw4bEp9w?si=hZ54wodu4ts90chB
Brilliant from Robert Shwartzman, first rookie on pole for more than four decades in the brand new Prema team, he’d never been on an oval until he got to Indy yet managed to beat all the more experienced drivers, with a team more used to running in F2 than Indy. What a great story.
Still not sure I understand how the Penske cars weren’t kicked out of qualifying completely for failing scrutineering, there’s definitely no conflict of interest there with one guy owning the team, the circuit, and the rights to the event itself!

Explanation of the Penske cars’ modifications.

They had modified the rear crash structure to blend in what’s supposed to be a seam, presumably for aerodynamic reasons in qualifying, and one of the cars was pulled up by a scrutineer allegedly following a tip-off from Chip Ganassi. Scrutineers don’t like modifications to safety-critical standardised parts.

Who would have thought a rookie that's never raced on an oval before and a 48 year old Japanese man who doesn't really race any more would be 1st and 2nd!
Amazing result - Schwartzman looked good in the last 2 days but wasn't setting the times alight in practice before that.If one was a betting man, I'd still back a Penske or a CGR car to win, but fantastic for Prema.
Not sure why Ilott was so low down the order though in comparison to his team-mate?
This the whatsapp I sent to my friend yesterday at 21-15.
"I'm not sure how much for Indycar you've seen this season but I get the distinct impression Prema might be a stalking horse for some sort of forthcoming Ferrari official entry. Not sure how they are going to brand it but it probably won't go down too well with the other teams given Ferrari's very long relationship with Dallara,"
Given it will probably take a couple of years to work out.... Hamilton. In a Ferrari. In the Indy 500 in 2027? That would get the marketeers & merchandisers attention.
I am having a bit of laugh but remember where you heard it first.......
