957 Cayenne GTS, £5k(ish) smoker, plus a 991.2 GTS
Discussion
Until recently I had quite a few cars that I enjoyed but slowly the enjoyment of so many cars started to diminished by the urge of buying a 911. And this is how I ended up buying a £5200 957 Cayenne GTS.
Previously I had-
W213 E63 AMG
W201 190e
986 Boxster
Mk1 Golf GTi fast road/track/hill climb car
And a w124 E320 cabriolet
Oh and a Vito for work and a couple of motorbikes
Generally I used the E63 and Boxster daily and Vito for work, the Vito died and I replaced it with a medium wheel base high roof sprinter that could double as transport for the bikes if needed. I was initially planning on selling the E63 and was going to sell the boxster, golf and 190e to make room for a 996 turbo or R8 but then the same old problem of running costs and finding someone to look after it crossed my mind. So I started to have a look at v10 R8’s and then if I’m going to spend that much I might as well have a look at a 911. Went to Newport and they showed me a couple of cars but neither were desirable specs to me. I went home, put my E63 on carwow and search autotrader etc for a 911 and quickly settled on a 991.2 GTS carrera 2 PDK. 2 days later I’m on the way to Wolverhampton to view and then buy that 911.
I digress. I bought a 911, sold some old cars and a newish car and now needed a daily driver, I thought it would be kind of cool to have a 955/957 again (I’d previously had a 957 turbo which I blew up) and settled in to the budget end of the market and as a long time follower of the 1-5 budget luxobarge thread I kept an eye on there too but nothing really grabbed my attention.
And then I saw it on FB marketplace, a 957 GTS in black/black and thought wouldn’t it be cool to have one as it would match my black/black 911 GTS. Messaged the chap and he replied an hour later and over the course of 4 hours I managed to prise a phone number out of him and an approx location. He sent me a video walk around and it seemed alright so I sent him a deposit. Roll on to late last night and it turned up on a transporter at 10pm.
Now I’ll throw some quick picture up and then we’ll move on to how bad is it…

The GTS is supposed to be the sweet spot, time will tell. I like the half leather/half alcantara interior, it’s supposed to have a slightly more powerful engine and it comes with all the turbo body styling and the same 21’s.
Let’s start with some good bits. It’s very tidy, doesn’t appear to have much paint or panel repairs, no obviously scuffs or dents, all the electrics appear to work too. Even the parking sensors and aircon. Interestingly spec wise it hasn’t got a sunroof or xenons and these are good things, my previous turbo and a friends turbo both suffered with issues here so I’m happy with that. It has electric memory seats. It was also optioned without the smokers pack so no cig lighter to allow you to charge your phone from. The wheels are all kerbed but are wrapped in matching Pirelli p zeros with loads of tread left. 2 keys.
There’s probably some more good bits like an immaculate interior but you’re not here to read the good bits are you?
So having been through it a bit earlier, here’s the list of what’s obviously wrong.
- badly needs an oil change, oil is black in there
- rattle/clunk from back
- brakes are s
t, really soft. At motorway speeds they also vibrate badly. Front brakes are visibly new. Rears look recent.
- whine comes and goes, feels/ sounds like a pulley or the PDCC pump but if it’s not causing an issue I’ll leave it for now
- hesitant? Doesn’t feel/sound like it revs cleanly but then the oil is s
t so air filter / plugs perhaps
It’s a cheap GTS so I was expecting a few issues. Will start working through them next week.

The cayenne does seem well built. Expensive to run but I don’t mind that if it’s strong. They are mind bending cheap to buy.
Love the matching spec. I own two grey BMW, which is incredibly dull, but a small part of me likes the fact they match. Sad.
I’ve had a similar aged touareg and there is very little difference between them bar better (and more!) leather inside. Love the matching spec. I own two grey BMW, which is incredibly dull, but a small part of me likes the fact they match. Sad.

Joining from the barge thread with full support and much interest.
Thank you!So I’ve set aside a budget of £1k to try and get it to a tolerable standard, it doesn’t need to be perfect but something that won’t make funny noises will be nice. I’ll start with a good clean which is free.
I did sort of set aside that money to upgrade the stereo to one with Apple car play and dab but I think a bit of maintenance is more important here. Unsure whether to send it to a porsche specialist or a general garage for an inspection and to price up what it needs.
Thanks both.
It was collected this evening by my usual garage, they were dropping a van off and had trailer space so it saves me a trip. I drove it about for him and he reckons it sounds fine and that I’m over reacting about the PDCC pump whine. He’ll do an oil change anyway as it’s been 5 years since it was changed and then a full service on top. Brakes will have a fluid change and bleed and he will investigate the vibration. I’m hopeful to have it back towards the end of the week.
We did a dig through of the paperwork with the car and the last documented service was at 96k at Porsche Tonbridge in Feb 2020 which included changing the PDCC expansion tank, fixing a PDCC leak, replacing power steering lines, and an oil cooler (doesn’t specific PDCC oil cooler if there is one) all for an eye watering £2848.48.
This was then followed by a further £1053.25 spent at Parr Porsche specialists for spark plug replacement, brake fluid replacement and replacement of a snapped headlight adjuster. The invoice states that there were 5 seized bleed nipples, 4 of 5 released safely but the NSR inner bleed nipple was seized - this may explain the rubbish brakes.
No doubt a £4k expense in a year led to a new owner and it’s easy to forget a 5k car still has £80k car running costs but hopefully I’ll be close to a useable car by the end of the week.

It’s definitely one of the reasons I picked this car, the other choice was a Miami blue with satin black wheels.
Had a quick scan of Instagram stories this morning, my mechanic was working on it last night, he said he would squeeze it in.

He spent a year spannering for RSR Nurburg before returning to West Wales. I reckon I’ll have it back today which is great as I’ve been using my bike to commute and this morning it was pouring down so have nabbed my sons car.
