audi RS6 V10 - what to do with an old engine, for track day
Discussion
Hi
I am looking at buying a RS6 v10 and want to use it as a track day car. So need to make it fast as possible and mechanically sound, so it does not blow-up.
What do I need to do with it? What to look out for?
Bearings, piston ring
Do i need to have steel sleaves put in the head?
Can i make it more like a lambo engine by changing parts?
So guidence would be great before burning lots of money on the wrong parts etc.
Thank you for your help.

You seem dead set on an RS6.how come? I've never owned one but for the money there seem a million other more interesting options as a track car. Thrashing one round a track is going to end in expensive pain. Those engines (C5/6) cost a lot to repair for the simplest things.
Top lurking btw.

Speaking as someone who spent many many thousands of pounds ruining perfectly good fast road cars trying to turn them into a track car, my advice is DON’T. Why RS6? They’re really heavy, as soon as you get them on track you will really notice the weight fighting you. You will get through a set of pads AND DISCS and tyres every single track day, if you’re really doing it right. Think about that cost. That’s over £2500 every track day. Plus it’ll do about 4mpg - or less. Really. Then when you’ve spend a load of money upgrading the suspension, getting the gearbox rebuilt, and fixing all the other things that will break, you’ll realise it isn’t actually that much fun, with the massive engine being in front of the axle wanting to go straight on every time you come to a corner. Finally the auto gearbox will frustrate you by being in the wrong gear most of the time.
Honestly, I can’t think of many worse cars to convert to a track toy, it’ll be mega expensive and no fun.
So, I have to ask, why RS6? Great out of the box fast road cars, terrible track car.

It depends if you want a car you use daily that you can take on track occasionally, or something to actually use on track. If it’s a dual purpose car (road and track) then you have to accept that ANYTHING road based will be pretty compromised on track. Yes you can drive them faster and harder than you can do on the road, but typically when you start to push the envelope you start butting up pretty soon against the limitations of the road car towards comfort & efficiency. Car magazines give a wholly non-representative view of owning fast road cars and taking them on track - in between all the guff about on the limit handling and a dab of oppo, they skim over the fact that proper track use is pretty ruinous on the mechanicals of a road car, and that the driving experience is limited.
If you want to take your normal car on track from time to time and accept you might get to drive it harder/faster than usual, and you’ll cause 10000 miles of wear in 50 track miles, and it won’t be the ultimate track experience, that’s one thing.
If you want a more dedicated track device where you can actually learn about car handling then don’t look at road cars. Buy something second gd d that someone has already spent a load of time & money on. Best of all, buy a race car. Specifically, something that used to be a race car. It will already have been stripped out, upgraded, and have a bunch of safety gear installed. If you’re not too picky then there’s a few websites selling ex-race cars (fast road & track iirc) and you can browse what’s available and pick something up pretty cheap. For example, I bought a Radical ex-race car about 20 years ago which was no longer competitive in the Radical Cup due to newer models being faster. I paid £7k for it, it came with about 8 sets of slicks and wets and a whole bunch of spare parts. It’s happy being on track all day, has reserves of capability beyond my talent, and if I have an Armco interface I can just drag the shell onto its trailer a drive it home - and my total exposure is £7k. Take a more valuable road car on track and break it - not only are you out more cash but how do you get home and remove the shell from the track?
Lots of variables and it depends what you want but I stand by what I said earlier - an RS6 will be pretty unrewarding on track to drive, and ferociously expensive to do so.
