After reassembling the front end of an R58 Mini which has factory Xenon headlights, I've now got the error light which I believe is the headlamp range warning light.

When the lights are turned on, they go through a routine of going up and down so the headlights seem to be working normally and when I move the level sensor, the lights look like they're moving as they should with normal suspension travel.

I did start the car without the headlights connected when I was assembling it so not sure if that might have caused a control module error that needs to be somehow reset or if I might have blown anything.

I had a spare level sensor which I swapped out on the off chance it might be that but that's made no difference.

I'm not sure how to move forward from here?

If this is recent, you could just wait and see whether it goes away after a few days. Otherwise, I'd check for fault codes and see whether clearing those made any difference.

Probably a code within the headlamp control module that needs clearing. Do you have a decent scan tool?

I thought I would probably need to scan for codes but the basic phone based bluetooth tool I'm using isn't bringing anything up.

It's probably time I invested in a scantool for the car as it's getting older and I like it so much that I would prefer to maintain it for long term ownership.

No I don't have a good scantool but there seems to be so many to choose from.

Is there any specific model anyone has good experience of with Minis?

Just an update to close this thread in case anyone has the same problem in the future.

So, I bought a scantool. I thought the Icarsoft BMM V3 would do what I needed.

I felt the user interface was clunky and altogether felt like technology from 20 years ago. It showed no errors.

This was useful as it told me that there were no control module errors but not sure how as the problem turned out to be a poor chassis earth so I would have expected some error to be shown.

In any case, it came down to following the wires back from the level sensor and the problem was fixed in 5 minutes.

Still not sure if the icarsoft unit was any good but I've sold it on as I just didn't like it. I will try to find another scantool but don't need one for now.

There's something very satisfying in old school wire tracing and fault finding - as long as you can find the problem and fix it.
