Ever had (or have) a job that came with perks? Things that aren't a benefit in kind and are not included on your payslip?

My very first job was working in a cinema and every week we got a voucher that we could use/give away to family friends that allowed two people to see any film at ours or our rivals cinema.

Much later in life I worked in Leeds for a company that had an office in London that that they outgrew and they took a lease on an office down the road that came with a three bedroom flat. They made it mandatory for visiting employees to use the flat when down in the smoke on business to save on some hotel bills, but they also allowed any members of staff to stay in the flat on a first come, first served basis on the weekend. As none of the local staff would want to use the flat it was almost always available for when me and my friends wanted a weekend in London.

Did you get any good perks?

M&S, late 80s, worked Saturdays while doing A levels.

Before the invention of yellow stickers they sold all the just about to expire food to the staff for 50-90% off. Mum worked there full time, I'm not sure we ever ate full price food.

As I work in the public sector, no, there are no undocumented perks.

The post office used to pay overtime on a union agreed time to deliver a round. The oldest lag with the gammiest legs would set it.

The result was a 19 year old could deliver two rounds and be home by 1300 but being paid ot until 1600 or later.

Beer fridge opened on Friday at 1700. Tickets to race meetings (horses). Premier League tickets. Etc. Online gaming/gambling was awash with money earlier this century.

My sister worked at the old Caley's chocolate factory in Norwich, eventually taken over by Rowntree.

The first day she started she was told she could eat as many chocolates as she liked whilst working on the production line.

She did for the first two days then never wanted another chocolate for the rest of her time there.

Missus has worked at a decent and very well known high-street clothing chain for the last few months. 25% off all their own clothing, at all times. They're more than happy for friends and family to use that discount, so I now have a rapidly expanding wardrobe of clothesas they sell everything from beachwear to suits. Staff also get to pick stuff from the various sales periods a few days before the public do.

My first proper job was working for a company owned by Associated Newspapers. Apart from 15p / day luncheon vouchers, the only other perk was two free tickets to the Ideal Home Exhibition.

I worked at Liberty (the department store not the yooman rarts organisation) in the 90s and we could buy clothes we would use for work at a 60% discount once a year. Cue my one and only Armani suit for less than £200 and Church's brogues at a similar amount off. My Dad was incredulous that I'd spent even that much on a pair of shoes having been born in 1925 and gone through the war and rationing etc. (and just generally being a tight arse) but I didn't of course wear them for work and they lasted me about 15 years.

Used to work in an office that had 'fizzy fridays' put on by the company that managed the building. The idea was apparently to get the various companies in the building to get to know each other and support local enterprise. In practice everyone spoke to their own colleagues. Unfortunately it all collapsed into administration during Covid as tenet after tenet vacated.

Other than that, tickets to watch Fulham playing in a European game as i worked on their Riverside Stand is just about it.

The Bribery Act 2010 seems to be one of those things that affects your average rank and file worker with strict limits on gift values and what not, while I don't doubt for a moment that those at the very top ignore it wholesale and money sloshes around as it ever did.

We had a box at White Hart Lane, part of my job was to drag clients there on occasion and feed them cheese and beer. Turns out I would watch Tottenham play, if you paid me.

one of the first companies I worked had a box at the Albert Hall and name would go in a hat for a pair of tickets if people were interested in going. this was in the early 80s and I got to see Ms Shirley Bassey and took the then GF. you had someone to bring you drinks too. marvellous.

Much later I worked for a bank that would, through sponsorship I think get tickets for the O2 concerts. When zeppelin did a one off get together I was the first to show up at the banks organiser " aha ha ha ooh no, not going to happen" I expect high up management or favoured clients had those.

another Bank partly sponsored Darren Manning in F3 and he happened to be one of the test drivers for BAR F1. fortunately I got on with the guy at my company who was involved in this as we often talked about cars and racing F1 so when there was an invitation from BAR to attend a general F1 test day at Silverstone as guests along with some of our banks clients, this guy spoke to my boss and insisted that I have the day off to help him out at the event...we had a room above the pits, to watch the cars from various teams testing, taken around to parts of the track that were close, probably Marshalls posts and did some indoor karting (which of course I won..dominated the heats and of course the top step on the podium )

It’s not always as great as it sounds.
