After flying to Venice in January to go skiing in Cortina and not going into Venice (I told my girlfriend it was a skiing trip not sightseeing!) I've now committed to go back to Venice in September.

We're going to go in September, spend 2 nights in Venice then get the train to Trieste, 1 night in Trieste, then get the coach to Rovinj or Pula or even 2 nights at each then fly back from Pula.

Is Trieste worth spending a night at? It's really just to break up the journey as 2 hours by train from Venice then another 3 hours by coach to Rovinj/Pula.

Any preferences over Rovinj or Pula?

We did plan a similar trip in 2020 but was cancelled due to COVID. Then we were planning the ferry from Venice to Pula but since then the cost of the ferry has got so expensive.

Trieste is a nice enough small city

Plenty of food and drink options and places to wander round.

Having said that I'd be tempted by the ferry rather than travelling by coach.

Unless there’s a very specific reason not to, I’d drive. Under 3hrs to pula from Marco Polo and it’ll be a cheap hire for that length of time.

Trieste isn’t somewhere I’d choose to spend time. Rovinj is nicer than pula but the latter is still worthwhile, much more chilled vibe in the south around there, pomer and Medulin.

ETA: do a search for istria, there was a multi page thread on here I put some ideas on.

We went to Rovinj last year, was lovely place to spend a few days.

You can get a ferry direct from Venice to Rovinj.

Thanks for the comments.

The car hire is very expensive, £900 for 2 days but i guess that's because picking up in Venice and dropping off in Pula (and driving through Slovenia).

It's looking like me might do the ferry instead. Spend 4 nights in Rovinj and 2 nights in Pula. Plus the 2 nights in Venice.

if you do drive then you will go past Lake Bled and should stop for lunch - if not then the Ferry is the most logocal and Rovinj was lovely.

I have spent a lot of time in Trieste and lived there briefly in 2014/15, and think it's a wonderful little city with a great diverse culture - and would recommend anyone to visit. There's at least enough for a couple of days to keep you occupied.

I'd recommend the boat too.
I did Porec / Venice / Porec a few years ago and the next stop on from us was Rovinj. Can't recall the exact cost but it was absolutely nowhere near 900 euro.
