Churchill not renewing my 27year old Discovery 1, 1998
Discussion
Good Afternoon,
Thought this info' may be useful.
Just received my Churchill car insurance and it states that they will not be renewing my policy, strange as nothing has happened or changed?
I phoned them to ask why and was helpfully informed that Company Policy excludes cars over 26 years old.
A shame, as my 1998 Land Rover Discovery 1 is well maintained and has yet to receive any "Cautions" at MOT time, but it is 27years old.
Just a thought, is this Govenment driven, in order to get the older cars off the roads???
Has anyone reading this got insurance on a 27 years and over car please? I will look at that Insurance Campany for renewal.
Thanks.
Regards

Afternoon Mr Ben.911,
Apologies for the 2 reply postings and the 1 topic starter; I thought this was VERY important and people were more likely to see the information if I shared my story on similar postings. Having to declare I've been refused a renewal quote, I needed to know why, and Churchill did not give specific reason with their letter, why not? I had to phone them for the answer.
Afternoon A.J.M.
A Non Story?
This same current topic of Churchill not offering renewal quotes, I found on 5 other motoring/Insurance related Forums, so like myself other people have worries & concernes regarding consequences of declaring this information to a new Insurance Company and how it will affect premiums.
Thank you ARHarh for advice, will try Classic Car. Had been using Go Compare and Money Supermarket.
Regards
Roy

I would think its likely your vehicle has just fallen out of their risk appetite, rather than deep conspiracy.
Big companies like that like to have tens of thousands of other similar risks, so they can play the average game and win.
Your risk will now be in the minority, specialist territory, so much more difficult for them to price. Rather than spend time assessing it individually they have just decided to have a blanket policy saying no.
As other have mentioned, a company that will asses the actual risk will be your best bet.
Plus, you don't need to declare that anywhere, an insurer declining to renew is very different to having insurance cancelled.

Two Quotes only from Classic Car Insurance companies when "ticking the box" declaring I'd been refused/declined a renewal quote (BY CHURCHILL), and it was £80 and £111 cheaper when not declared!
My Quoted Examples:-
Adrian Flux was £521.67 - and when declaring a refused/declined renewal was £601.20.
Principle Insurance was £522.66 - and when declaring a refused/declined renewal was £633.32
Now SAGA.
SELECT Policy - was £416.01 - and when declaring a refused/declined renewal was £677.04 - An increase of £261.03
SAGA PLUS Policy - was £547.31 - and when declaring a refused/declined renewal was £849.46 - An increase of £302.15
Seems all Companys I tried, penalise the applicant if they have to tick the box.

PS. Thanks Stupot123. Just seen your posting. BUT the "Tick Box " does ask - "Have you ever had an insurance policy declined, cancelled, voided or had special terms imposed? That question covers a VERY wide range of circumstances. I would not want to have my insurance declared VOID by not being truthful.

I had typed this referring to the above- Are there any current insurance experts in town, its been many years since I've been an underwriter, but this certainly wasn't a thing then?
If you have had insurance cancelled, that's a big deal for your new insurer.
If your current provider has declined to renew because they have chosen to change their risk portfolio and your risk has remained static, that's not something that needed declared in the past. Its none of their business, and certainly not a reflection on your risk.
But I appreciate times may have changed.

But then I saw your edit, so I can clarify without any external help. That box is not referring to your current situation. You have not "ever had an insurance policy declined, cancelled, voided or had special terms imposed?" Your answer to this question is no.
You haven't actually been refused insurance, you have just had an email saying they are unable to offer insurance this year. It would be like say all the companies that did not quote on Compare the market had refused to insure you.
Or more to the point me saying I will not insure you. Be careful you will end up paying loads. I would have expected classic insurance to be nearer £150 than £600 but it all depends on circumstances, and I have no idea about you or your driving record.

Thank you Stupot123 & ARharh for your contributions here, appreciate your time on this matter.
I contacted Landsdown Insurance Brokers and they confirmed your assessment of the situation; I DO NOT have to declare that Churchill will not be offering me a renewal, as their Company policy has changed criteria this year to now exclude insuring older cars.
Trying to find reputable Insurance Companys that won’t fight legitimate claims and pay out on 90% plus of claims, I shortlisted Saga over 50’s, NFU and Aviva. Speaking to these Companys, all will insure vehicles over 26yo. Great, but astonished at NFU quote of £856.
Saga came in with best overall competitive price of £436.93 including legal (£100K) and personal accident cover (£150K); have gone with them.
ARharh, have held UK full driving licence since 1966, drive 12K miles a year, only ever involved in 2 accidents and that was young chap shunting me in the rear (was looking at 3 girls in mini-skirts) and an idiot/muppet for driving too fast on an icy road, slamming on his brakes and locking all wheels. I’ve been fortunate, never being involved with any Motorway pile-ups…
Thanks again.

These guys https://www.peterjamesinsurance.co.uk/ insure my series 2a land rover for £130, with unlimited miles. I am not quite as old as you at 61, and do live in a cheap insurance area which may account for the cost difference.
