Morning all - fresh 110S owner here, had the car a week and already love it.

Question to the forum - has anyone painted the standard aluminium exhaust tip black? I'm unwilling to shell out £380 for a carbon tip and this seems to be an alternative solution as I'd rather keep the standard exhaust. I don't like chrome finishes or other shiny bare metal on a car and it does appear to tarnish/ blacken.

If so, how successful was painting it? Is the part an easy one to remove?

an option i am considering too, have not looked at how easy to get off yet but priming to take paint and using either engine black paint or even BBQ black black should produce the look i think both of us are looking for with little effort..............a prerequisite for me! lol.

I would have titled this 'I need a black ar5ehole' but as it was my first post I didn't want to upset any forum police

The exhaust surround is very similar to the one on my old Megane RS265. I took it off and sanded it down, painted it sating black with a bot of spray paint I had lying around, twelve moths on and it was still pretty much perfect

I'm with you on this @MaFue. I got as far as ordering some PJ1 Fast Black engine paint (good for high temps) & it's been sat on a shelf for two years. One of these days it might reach the top of my to do list.

There's a how to somewhere, for fitting the carbon version, so if you find that you'll know what to do. It looked like an easy job, although perhaps quite time consuming, so far as I remember.

Thanks all for the replies

Been trawling the forum posts and there is one which details fitting the carbon tip, it's a case of taking off the undertray and unclipping and removing the rear venturi, then the screws holding the polished sphincter are visible.

Probably an hour's job once the car is jacked up high enough to get some tools underneath to the tray fixings.

The wife will be wholly unsurprised that after only a week I'm already taking it to bits to see how it works.

I used a local company very recently who carried out the work for a nominal amount of £30 (would recommend them)

That's a bargain smile

I guess that they painted it in situ, otherwise a hell of a bargain with them removing the under tray etc.

No I removed it, easy job, ran the part down to them and job was done in a couple of days (I've a spare trim anyhow). Excellent service (Vulcan Shotblasting Basildon); I'd have no problem recommending them. They offer a selection of colours. Probably best to call them)

That looks perfect. Basildon not in my 'hood but thanks for the pics, just the look I'm after.

Satin black gives a much better finish than gloss to these eyes.

Looks good. Any pics of the rear from a distance? Think it would probably suit well an S with black wheels and black A badges etc.
Youre right - there isnt really any other silver trim on the car.

Update: Decided against black for now and to go anthracite grey first, so bought a tin from Halfords for £11 and set to work stripping the undertray and exhaust finisher, it's really only a half hour job..

After the first coat of VHT paint it went into the Aga for half an hour to bake-cure the coat, made a really good finish.

Quite pleased with this, it's toned down the starkness of the polished exhaust and is a lot more subtle

That looks really good, is that one coat or two and what prep did you do to the part?

Can you share the product code please.
I may copy you on this colour if you don't mind?

It certainly makes the back look more aggressive, if an Alpine can?

Cheers
Paul

Thanks! Of course I don't mind, go for it..

After removing the part I cleaned with white spirit to remove any metal polish, then rubbed down with scotchbrite abrasive cloth to lightly key the surface. I did use an etch primer but read various articles about putting paint straight onto bare metal without primer, but decided not to rightly or wrongly. Three coats of etch primer with an hour in between each and a rub down with P1200 paper to remove any small imperfections and leave it perfectly smooth.

The paint is Halfords Dark Anthracite VHT -
https://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-and-body-...

One main coat of VHT then another misting, about 20 minutes between each, no rubbing down between coats. Then left for half an hour to air dry before 25-30 mins in the Aga top oven which runs at about 200-210degC.

ETA: it is normal for it to smoke a bit and stink the kitchen out when you open the oven, it's curing..
