Anyone use one on the road?

I watched bennets vid about airbags - and while I'm not about to buy one of them was convinced by the air ambulance paramedic that a chest protector is a good idea.

This would be inside old leathers that don't have any provision for such things. So it would have to be an insert into a light t-shirt type base layer. Unless new leathers support them?

I’ve been thinking about chest protectors too, but have the same issue in that my leathers don’t have the pocket for them (nor for a back protector I should add). My Alpinestars textiles do though and the Alpinestars Nucleon protectors fit well with very good coverage.

Short of buying new leathers with the pocket for back and chest protectors this leaves an airbag vest as the only option for when I can’t be arsed to don the textile jacket. I’ve been looking at something like the new Alpinestars Tech Air Plasma that is designed to fit under a jacket.

Although they’re pricey, it only takes one idiot on the road to recoup the value.

Worn a Forcefield one for years. Use velcro to hold it to my braces. Forget it is on once you are moving. Fortunately, never had to really test it

Built into some hi-end Rukka jackets. I don't notice mine when wearing it.

The emergency services guys who taught my Biker Down course also highly recommended wearing chest protection.

Provided they inflate, most airbags should protect the chest.

not overly interested in buying an air vest as I just don't think I'll wear it even though ultimately it's a 'good idea'.

Have been idly contemplating buying new leathers for some time as the labels inside my existing ones refer to 'fashion garment' rather than 'AAA' rated protection and figure things have moved on considerably.

A sift through the leathers on the RST website seems to reveal nothing with provision for chest protectors that's suitable for road use. Any others out there? (I'm not after textiles)

My Rukka has it, never notice it’s there apart from when zipping up. I like to know it’s there though.

It is more noticeable if you are off the bike?

No, I have only ever noticed it when it’s really cold as the armour takes a few mins of body heat to flex but after that I don’t think I have noticed it there.

With my Alpinestars one piece leathers I always wore a Level 4 Forcefield back protector. A few years ago I read about chest protectors and bought an Alpinestars one that fits down the front of my leathers.

I’ve given up riding but that’s a different story. I would say that chest protection is very important.

I have been wearing a alpinestars CE2 chest protector for years.

For me it makes total sense - if you hit something front on then you are going to be thrown forward and your chest could hit the tank / car / lamp post etc causing serious trauma to your vital organs.

I wear a back protector as well but am always surprised at how over looked chest protection is.

Cant fully eliminate the risk of course but doesnt hurt to tip the odds in your favour.

I wear one of these under a Rukka jacket with the standard protectors removed when offroading - you could try something similar?

I'm torn. It gets really hot here, 35C+ in the Summer. So I need the most vented gear possible or I'll just sweat to death.

I don't currently use an airbag or chest protection, but I'm assuming either will make me hotter.

It makes a lot of sense but alot of chest protectors are REALLY THIN. Which makes me sceptical about their real world benefits unless someone has experience to share in a fall?

My jacket has chest pockets so I've fitted D3O armour. Better than nothing but nothing like the protection an airbag would provide.

Doesn't make a difference to heat in the summer (leather) but a tad warmer when cooler.

Folks take it from me get it and wear it! I came off a mtb downhill full tilt and shattered my sternum, collarbone, 3 ribs, punctured lung and 3 years later I’m still fekked. I’m lucky to be alive as the bone shattered outwards on impact, if they’d gone in I’d be dead (trauma surgeon showed me on the CT scan how lucky I was.)

Can only imagine the damage if going faster on a real bike.

It makes more sense on a MTB as going OTB is much more common, or slamming chest first into a tree for example. There are infinitely more hazards on a typical downhill MTB trail. Most motorbike offs are low or highsides on the road, where you'll be sliding on your side or back. 60mph into a lamp post you're dead with or without a chest protector. If you're that concerned, an airbag jacket is the safest option. Might be up to £900 but that's cheap compared to dying.

The airbag is the most significant development in motorcycle protection since the helmet.

Other than head trauma, severe trauma to the thorax is what kills.

Not cheap, but if you can find £500 it's a no brainer.
