I've got to travel up North for a funeral at the end of May, and will have a couple of days on my own in Newcastle. Never been anywhere this far up country so its all a bit of a mystery to me.

Got a Hotel room about 5 mins from the station, so i'm in a pretty central location, but i've not got transport.

What are the things to do or see in the city centre for the lone traveller? Bar's to visit? restaurants for a solo meal? Museums, sightseeing, music, art... What has newcastle got to offer?

Go to You Only Live Once in High Bridge Street. smile Milf-tastic!

Enjoy, Newcastle is fantastic, and if you get the time get on a Metro to Tynemouth and walk up to Whitley Bay, it's lovely. There's also a cool little market at Tynemouth station on Saturday mornings, with lots of local artists.

Edited to add, The Wobbly Duck is a tiny little craft beer basement bar in Eldon Square (centre of town) which is lovely for a quiet beer and a bit of relaxation.

Funnily enough the funeral im going to is at Whitley Bay Cemetery, so I'm hoping to get the Metro there.

Edit: Just looked up where YOLO is, and its literally opposite my hotel's front door, so I'll have to go in there now!

Have made a note of YOLO and Wobbly Duck – hopefully the natives are friendly smile

We alway stay at the Motel One too, it's nice and central and you can watch people in varying degrees of undress going into YOLO from the hotel bar. smile

There's a nice place to eat and drink a couple of doors along. Just come out of the hotel and turn left.

Love Newcastle, always have the Get Carter theme playing in my head when the train pulls in hehe and always enjoy being there.

Oh yeah, that reminds me, there's a nice little market along the bank of the Tyne (under the Tyne Bridge) on Sunday mornings, with lots of Newcastle related photos and artworks. A few minutes walk from where you're staying.

You’re literally spoilt for choice in Newcastle, there’s something like 174 bars within a mile of St J Park, as you are heading to the coast there’s a nice bar in Tynemouth Metro Stn, Platform 2 and a short walk away is Riley’s Fish Shack right on the beach at King Edward’s Bay, it’s usually busy but you can get served as a walk in, the food is fantastic.

As for the city, Above has great views from the Newcastle side and Six at the Baltic has a casual walk in bar area which has views back across the Tyne , foods also good.

YOLO is normally busy, Hibou Blanc (same street) has a stunning bar, just adjacent is the underground Mother Mercy cocktail bar. Round the corner is Barluga which has a nice outdoor terrace at the rear.

Dabbawal, also on high bridge has good Indian Food, they have a sister restaurant in West Jesmond a short Metro ride away.

The Botanist has great views from the top floor down onto Greys Monument, Stack next to SJP has live music and loads of food and drink options but it’s crazy busy when the footballs on.

Fenwicks on Northumberland Street has Colmans Chip Shop, a good Italian and the best Steak in Newcastle at Porterhouse.

Enjoy the city, you can’t go wrong wherever you end up.

I reckon a hidden gem of Newcastle is the Grainger Market.
It's a little way South of Grey's Monument, on the right as you head down towards the Central (railway) station. (Entrances are not obvious).
"Mall" type shopping from the Victorian era!

Ouseburn is well worth a saunter along the quayside. Second the wobbly duck but the town mouse and the mean eyed cat are also worth checking out. Have a walk over the high level bridge and check out the coffin (central bar)

The Metro station is a bit of a distance from the cemetery, just check your route and timings. My aunty’s funeral was there about 10 years ago.

…there’s some cracking ice cream shops at Whitley Bay.

Amazing part of the country, its a shame we didn't discover it till recently, otherwise would have seriously thought about moving there for work/family home etc.

It's a shame you have no transport, the National Trust has just opened up landing again on the Farne islands. We've been to the islands twice in 3 years now and will be going back again in the future.

If you cannot get that far just getting out to Whitley bay is worthwhile, there is even a beach there.

Lots of good ideas here, it's a great city. I believe that the old Turkish bath has reopened recently, haven't tried that yet but will definitely be trying it next time we head up.

If you're in Whitley Bay, visit Tynemouth which isn't far away. Huge sandy beach, decent bars in the centre, fish shack on the beach, and The View restaurant on the beach for breakfast / lunch.

The Ouseburn area has a cracking vibe for pubs and bars, especially if it's sunny. The Ship Inn, Cluny, Tyne Bar and I think there is a micro brewery or two there now. I normally like to end up at the Free Trade Inn at the top of the hill overlooking the Tyne and the bridges. No nonsense pub with cracking views.

The Telegraph is a good bar which is close to the train station. You could always grab a pint at the Centurion bar right next to the station too. Some amazing Victorian tile work.

(I also have a funeral at the end of May at Whitley Bay crem. Sorry for your loss.)
