Wondering if it's really worth using genuine parts now when aftermarket parts are available!

Last year, I purchased a brand new alarm module for the DB9 from HWM in Walton-upon-Thames after I was getting the "alarm system service required" message.

It's a pretty straightforward replacement inside the NSR wheel arch, so off I trotted to HWM to purchase one. All good, went home, installed it and been ok ever since, until this last weekend.

Car displayed the same "alarm system service required" message so I called HWM enquiring about the parts warranty. 12 months as expected, and as with any other main dealer of any other manufacturer, as it's an electrical part, it must be checked, diagnosed and replaced by them under warranty.

That's all fine

BUT.............

they will charge diagnosis time AND labour to replace, even if it's a parts warranty job!!!! The warranty should include the replacement cost.

So, they will charge even if the part is faulty. Any other manufacturer I have ever come across will only charge if it IS NOT a warranted part.

So they do not warrant any part you install yourself? That's BS unless they can show that the part has failed due to incorrect installation or use.

May as well save your money and fit aftermarket parts at a fraction of the AM prices if you get no warranty back-up from the main dealer.

Going to look into getting the part now from Volvo aftermarket because AM's labour charges to diagnose and fit will far outweigh the parts cost.

Not happy with this dealer experience.

I think that is pretty much standard, if they had fitted it for you then I would expect them to cover all costs.
If you fit yourself you can not expect them to fit a new one for you, pop it out, get it replaced and refit yourself.

I agree I have never heard of someone paying for the labour that someone else has fitted
You would be in business for long

Check the circuits to the module. Might be a voltage drop due to corrosion. Give the cables a good wiggle.

My motor factors paid for the labour to replace a faulty clutch they supplied 6 months along, and my BMW main dealer replaced a flywheel that caused clutch judder a few weeks after supply, all free of charge under warranty and I installed both originally.
A few other claims on more minor parts were also covered including labour.
My motor factors will either do a "no quibble" direct exchange and refund immediately, or will pay labour if the part is presented first and the part is inspected and fault agreed. Never had an issue.

Doesn't sound right - Citroen's (ex dealer service manager here) process was to pay for the part, labour and diagnosis at a dealership should a genuine part fail within the 12 month warranty period. This includes parts fitted outside of the dealership network; as long as the customer had an invoice showing the part was purchased at a dealership, Citroen would warrant it as above.

Of course, the diagnosis etc. would be chargeable to the customer should the issue be proven not to be a manufacturing defect with the supplied part (and you'd be amazed how many times it was a case of misdiagnosis by the customer or independent garage!). We did do a few parts warranty claims though, and they were all processed and paid without fuss.
