Clearly I'm old/boring/unfashionable/all of the above etc, because frankly I think nearly all of the people on this list look fking ridiculous.

The wackier the outfit the more clicks and photos appearing in magazines, papers, etc there will be.

Gotta keep that profile high!

They (at least the wearers of the totally outlandish ones) change once inside.

Lewis Hamilton's garb was relatively restrained.

I like that he does his own thing style-wise, but that matador/ figure skater gone wrong thing is a fail for me at least.

Haven't heard of most of them, but they all look like Muppets to me.

I really like some of the outfits. It's not supposed to be practical - it's a high fashion extravaganza and outrageous is the order of the day. Or night.

I've ended up working in this industry (on the tasseled tech fringes) and live in a revolving state of bemusement, confusion, understanding, appreciation and frustrated rage, it's really quite something to be part of. Especially if you're the least fashionable person there biglaugh

A good result to get coverage like this but I'm not sure if any of it really translates into sales.

For many, it's kind of the point. They wear something entirely insane that fits the theme of the night.

Perhaps the theme this year meant it was a little more timid than usual.

Exactly this. Don't take it so seriously OP. It's just a fancy-dress event.

You have to laugh ... Its been long established that PH is the epitome of badly dressing middle/late-aged predominantly white men with clothing items in current rotation that oft date back to the 80s or earlier. Commentary on Met-Gala outfits and dress codes is about as far from PH norms as possible.

I think it does drive sales but it’s bit like the mega expensive end of the car world where it looks completely insane from the outside, but totally reasonable if you “get it”.

Vogue was the bible to the girls at my school and lots of them follow the various big fashion and art shows around the world. They spend unbelievable amount on clothes. They will all have been all over this.

I guess it’s a bit like motorsport most of us wouldn’t want drive a 911 RSR on the road but it all adds to the brand perception that sells 911s.
